OHIO WESLEYAN'S MAGUIRE, DENISON'S ROYER HEAD 20TH ANNIVERSARY MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM

Ohio Wesleyan’s Dave Maguire and Denison’s Peter Royer head an impressive list of past standouts named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 20th Anniversary men’s lacrosse team. Hoffman and Royer are two of the seven former NCAC Players of the Year represented on the 18-person squad.

Maguire, the Player of the Year in 1997 and 1998, guided the Bishops to two NCAC championships in his four seasons. He was a four-time First Team All-NCAC selection at attack, and is the conference’s all-time leader in goals scored (225) and points per game (4.9). Royer, a goalkeeper, was voted NCAC co-Player of the Year in 2000, and was a four-time first team choice. He has a career saves percentage over .600, and never finished a season lower than .598.

Two other four-time first-team all-conference selections during the decade join them on the squad: Bishop attacker Darren McGurn and midfielder Dan Stroka. McGurn was the conference’s Player of the Year as a freshman in 1995, while Stroka was co-Newcomer of the Year two years later. Four other honorees earned all-conference recognition four years in a row: Denison’s Ryan Berger and Kevin Sullivan, as well as Kenyon’s Derick Stowe and Mike Collins.

In addition to Maguire and Royer, four other NCAC Players of the Year were selected. Ohio Wesleyan’s Matt Coughlin (2002), Jason Fogelson (2001) and Zach Gagel (co-2000), and Denison’s Ethan Ewing (1994).

Ohio Wesleyan, winner of six of NCAC titles in the past 10 years and 13 overall, earned eight of the 18 selections. In addition to those mentioned above, Chris LeMoult and David Auch, both multiple first-team selections during their careers, round out the Bishops’ representatives. Denison, which won or shared five titles, claimed six spots on the all-decade team. In addition to the four mentioned previously, a pair of four-time all-NCAC Players from 1992-95 were also selected from the Big Red: Alex Jacobs and Marc Jacobsen. Kenyon, the only other squad to earn an NCAC title in men’s lacrosse when they shared the title with the Bishops and the Big Red in 2000, claimed three spots on the all-decade team. Stowe, Collins and Blaire Modic, a three-time all-conference performer, were the Lords’ selections.

Oberlin is the only other squad represented on the all-decade team. Ryan Kelley, who starred for the Yeomen from 1993-96, was voted on as a midfielder.

The North Coast Athletic Conference will be announcing 20th Anniversary teams in all 22 sports during the 2003-04 academic year. The NCAC was founded in 1983 and began competition in the fall of 1984. The North Coast’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country.

The NCAC’s 20th Anniversary teams were selected in each sport through balloting by present and former coaches and administrators. Athletes who participated in conference competition between the fall of 1993 through the spring of 2003 were eligible for selection.
