KENYON’S OLDS, OHIO WESLEYAN’S HOFFMAN HEAD 20TH ANNIVERSARY MEN’S SOCCER SQUAD

Kenyon’s Kelsey Olds and Ohio Wesleyan’s Philip Hoffman head an impressive list of past standouts named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 20th Anniversary men’s soccer team. Olds and Hoffman are two of the 13 former NCAC Players of the Year represented on the 18-person squad.

Olds, the Defensive Player of the Year in 1996 and Offensive Player of the Year in ‘97, guided the Lords to two consecutive NCAC championships in those years. The 1996 squad finished second in the NCAA Division III Tournament after falling in the championship game to the College of New Jersey, 2-1, after four overtime periods. He began his career in the North Coast as the 1995 Newcomer of the Year.

Hoffman earned Player of the Year honors in 2000 and 2001. He is a four-time All-NCAC member, making his debut on the all-league second team in 1998, then making three straight first-team appearances. Hoffman led the Bishops to NCAC championships and NCAA berths each of his fours playing seasons culminating in the Battling Bishops first NCAA Division III championship in 1998.

The North Coast’s leaders in goals, assists and points join Olds on the front line. Kenyon’s Mark Phillips and Ohio Wesleyan’s Wayne Street both earned first team honors in 1993 and 1994. Phillips is the NCAC all-time single-game leader with nine goals against Case in 1994. He is tied for the lead in goals in a season (25 in 1993) and in career goals (74). Phillips also owns the records for points in a single game (18), a season (59) and career (180). He led the Lords to a shared NCAC championship with Wittenberg in 1993. Street, the 1994 Offensive Player of the Year, tops all players in assists per season and career with 20 (1994) and 51, respectively. Three-time All-NCAC first-team member Obi Moneme, of Ohio Wesleyan, and Wittenberg’s Jay Freund are the squad’s fourth and fifth forwards. Moneme was named the 1995 Offensive Player of the Year. Freund was an All-NCAC first team pick in 1993 and 1994.

Ohio Wesleyan owns three of the five midfield spots, with Chris Duff and Chris Vorenkamp teaming with Hoffman. Duff (1993), Vorenkamp (2002) and Kenyon’s Wayne Albertyn (1996) join Hoffman as previous NCAC Player of the Year winners. Three-time first-team All-NCAC selection Kulu Moyo from Kenyon rounds out the midfielders.

Two Bishop Defensive Players of the Year highlight the defensive 20th anniversary picks. Jason Chiero (1994) and Chris Hayes (1999) each made two appearances on the All-NCAC first-team. The duo are joined in the backfield by Allegheny’s Kyle Henry, Earlham’s Chris Lindsey, Kenyon’s Leigh Sillery and Wittenberg’s Jonas Osterberg. Goalkeepers Orion Creamer, of Earlham, and James Marks, of Allegheny, round out the team. Creamer was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1998, while Marks earned Player of the Year honors in 2001.

Ohio Wesleyan, which has won seven of the past 10 North Coast titles, and has won 13 overall, leads the way with seven players on the team. Kenyon, which claimed two conference championships between 1993 and 2002 and five overall, is next with five. Wittenberg, co-champs with Kenyon in 1993, Allegheny and Earlham each placed two representatives on the squad. Seven players selected to the 20th anniversary team span the conference’s two decades, having begun their careers before the 1993 season.

The North Coast Athletic Conference will be announcing 20th Anniversary teams in all 22 sports during the 2003-04 academic year. The NCAC was founded in 1983 and began competition in the fall of 1984. The North Coast’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country.

The NCAC’s 20th Anniversary teams were selected in each sport through balloting by present and former coaches and administrators. Athletes who participated in conference competition between the fall of 1993 through the spring of 2003 were eligible for selection.
