Mike DeWitt, associate athletics director and men's basketball coach at Ohio Wesleyan University, will serve as Ohio Wesleyan's interim athletics director beginning in mid-May, it was announced today by Provost Chuck Stinemetz.
"Mike DeWitt's stellar career with the Battling Bishops - as a student-athlete, a coach, and a leader in Division III athletics - makes him the ideal person to serve as interim director of athletics," said Stinemetz. "Mike's leadership will be crucial as we move to launch new varsity programs in women's rowing and men's wrestling."
DeWitt will be called upon to nurture the growth of Ohio Wesleyan's men's wrestling and women's rowing programs by beginning the process to hire coaches and establish infrastructure and other support for the teams, which are scheduled to begin competition as club sports during the 2017-18 academic year and as varsity sports in 2018-19.
"I am honored to have been chosen by our administration to lead our department during this time of transition," DeWitt said.
"This is an exciting period of growth in our department and I look forward to working with all factions of the campus community to reach our goals as we search for a new full-time athletics director while maintaining the tradition of excellence that everyone associated with Ohio Wesleyan athletics has come to expect."
Ohio Wesleyan has formed a search committee, chaired by Stinemetz, to conduct a national search for OWU's next athletics director, who will be only the sixth person to fill that position since 1921. The search committee consists of alumni, coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff, and administrators.
DeWitt has served as an associate athletics director since 2011 and was an assistant athletics director from 2004-11.
DeWitt has been a leader at the conference and national levels as well. He served on the NCAA Division III Great Lakes advisory committee from 2003-06, and was on the NCAA Division III national committee from 2009-13, serving as committee chair during the 2012-13 season. He also served as chair of the North Coast Athletic Conference basketball coaches from 2004-05.
DeWitt is the winningest men's basketball coach in Ohio Wesleyan history, with 306 wins at the Battling Bishop helm. Ohio Wesleyan has won the last 3 NCAC championships and appeared in 5 of the last 6 NCAA Division III tournaments. DeWitt's teams have made a total of 6 Division III tournament appearances, making runs to the final 16 teams in 2008 and 2016.
He has been named Great Lakes District Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches 3 times and NCAC Coach of the Year 4 times. He has coached 6 All-America and 3 Academic All-America® selections, 3 district or region Player of the Year choices, 6 NCAC Player of the Year selections, and 3 NCAC Newcomer of the Year picks.
A 1987 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, DeWitt is only the fourth Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball coach in the last 70 years. He joins Branch Rickey as one of only 3 Ohio Wesleyan alumni to hold the position.
During his playing career, DeWitt was a member of 3 conference championship teams. He was a 2-time All-NCAC selection at Ohio Wesleyan, and helped the Bishops win NCAC championships in 1985-86 and 1986-87 and an NCAC tournament title in 1985-86.
DeWitt will replace Roger Ingles, who will leave Ohio Wesleyan in mid-May to become athletics director at Capital University.
A native of Galion, Ohio, DeWitt earned his master's degree in sport management from The Ohio State University in 1990.
