North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week – Sept. 17
Football - Offensive Athlete of the Week – Gabe Philhower, Ohio Wesleyan
Ohio Wesleyan kicker, Gabe Philhower (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) provided all of the OWU scoring in the Bishops’ thrilling 9-7 win over Wooster. Philhower set the tone early, connecting on a 22-yard field goal early in the first quarter to give Ohio Wesleyan a 3-0 lead, then gave a glimpse of things to come by drilling a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to bring the Bishops within one, 7-6. His final kick came with :18 left in regulation, a 27-yarder that provided the 9-7 final.
Football - Defensive Athlete of the Week – Nate Keirn, Denison
Denison junior defensive end Nate Keirn (Medina, Ohio/St. Ignatius) racked up six tackles, one and a half sacks, three tackles-for-loss and two QB hurries in Denison’s 42-0 shutout win over Allegheny on Saturday. The shutout was Denison’s first since 2015.
Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – David Anderson, Kenyon
Kenyon senior David Anderson (Urbana, Ill./Urbana) led the Lords with five points last week on two goals and an assist. His goal against Thomas More turned out to be the game-winner as Kenyon improved to 5-0-1. Anderson’s four goals on the season are a team-high while his nine points slot him second in the NCAC.
Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week – Isabelle Smith, Oberlin
Isabelle Smith (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Paul Academy and Summit) improved to 3-1 in goal for the Yeowomen as she made nine saves in her first two career shutouts last week. On Wednesday, Smith made three of her five saves in final 36 minutes of play to secure a 2-0 victory against Geneva. She also made four saves in a 1-0 victory against Marietta on Saturday.
Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week – Morgan Stearley, DePauw
DePauw’s Morgan Stearley (Center Point, Ind./Northview) was named to the DePauw Tigers Invitational all-tournament team as the Tigers went 3-1 including a five-set win over No. 11-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Friday. Stearley collected 63 kills (3.94 k/s), 58 digs (3.63 d/s) and eight blocks (0.5 b/s) across 16 sets for the Tigers.
Field Hockey Athlete of the Week – Gigi Guenther, Kenyon
Kenyon’s Gigi Guenther (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) tallied the game-winning goal for the Ladies during the team’s 4-1 win against Earlham. It was the second-year player’s first multiple-goal effort of her career and it helped Kenyon improve to 4-2 and more importantly 3-0 in the NCAC.
Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Matt Del Rosso, Allegheny
Allegheny sophomore Matt Del Rosso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) won medalist honors at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Shootout, topping the 83-player field by one shot. Del Rosso opened with a four-under 66 in Saturday’s first round, the third-lowest 18-hole total in team history, before closing with a one-under 69 in Sunday’s finale. Del Rosso’s tournament total of 135 is the lowest 36-hole total by a golfer in Allegheny program history.
Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week – Ali Metzger, Allegheny
Allegheny senior Ali Metzger (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) earned medalist honors for the first time in her career, as she placed first at the two-day Heidelberg Invitational with a two-day total of 162. After shooting 82 to close the first round in second place, Metzger made a two-shot improvement in the final round, closing with an 80 to top the 81-player field by one stroke. While it was her first career tournament victory, it marked Metzger’s 16th career top-10 finish, and fifth top-five effort.
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Kyle Rose, Kenyon
Kenyon’s Kyle Rose (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) was the top runner at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational over the weekend, finishing the 8K run with a time of 27:50.3. The Lords also won the event, their first team victory since the 2013 season.
Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Linnea Halsten, Oberlin
Oberlin senior Linnea Halsten (Madison, Wis./Madison East) placed first on the 6K course at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational Saturday morning with a time of 22:46.9. The senior beat the 80-person field by 1:00.5 as the Yeowomen placed first among six teams with 23 points.
NCAC Milestones & Records (Sept. 10 – Sept. 16)
Wooster, Women’s Soccer - Senior Erica White (Washington, Pa./Fort Cherry) scored 11 seconds into Wooster’s contest against Mount St. Joseph marking the quickest goal to start a game in program history.
Allegheny, Men’s Golf - At the two-day Carnegie Mellon Fall Shootout, Allegheny sophomore Matt Del Rosso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) won medalist honors with a two-round total of 135 (66-69). It marked the lowest 36-hole score for a player in Allegheny program history.
Denison, Men’s Golf - Denison junior Christian Early (Hinsdale, Ill./Fenwick) fired a 3-under-par round of 67, breaking the 18-hole individual scoring record of 68 that was shared by six different individuals. The team set a new 36-hole tournament record of 574.
Wabash, Football - Isaac Avant (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) scored a touchdown on a 98-yard run. That is the second-longest run in both NCAC and Wabash history, and is the longest run for the Little Giants in modern history since the 100-yard field was established in football.
Hiram, Volleyball - The Terriers earned a 10-0 start for the first time in school history. It also marks just the eighth 10-game winning streak in program history.
