__________________________________________________________________________ May 5, 2003 JEZIERSKI AND MOTT NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Denison freshman catcher A.J. Jezierski (El Cajon, CA/Valhalla) was 8-12 (.667) at the plate with two doubles, three runs scored and six RBI. In the game three of the NCAC semifinals series, Jezierski was 4-5 (.800) with three RBI and one run scored. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan junior Tyler Mott (Grove City, OH/Grove City) went the distance in the Bishops' 2-1 win over Allegheny in game one of the Tournament semifinal series. He also pitched OWU out of a jam in the seventh inning of the nightcap but did not qualify for the win. He was 5-15 (.333) from the plate, scoring six runs, including both of the Bishops' runs in game one against Allegheny. __________________________________________________________________________ April 28, 2003 KAPFERER AND MOTT NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Freshman first baseman Kurt Kapferer (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson Area) went 12-19 (.632) from the plate with four homers and 11 RBI, before sitting out the final game of Wooster's 7-0 week. He also reached base via three walks and two hit by pitches for a .708 on-base percentage for the week, and doubled once and scored nine times. Kapferer began the week with a home run in each game of the Hiram sweep (5-7, 5 RBI), followed the next day with a solo blast that gave the Scots a 13-9 lead in the eighth inning over Otterbein, and capped his week by going 6-for-9, including a double, a home run, and six RBI, during the first three games of the Allegheny series. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan junior Tyler Mott (Grove City, OH/Grove City) hurled a three-hit shutout in the opener of the NCAC series against Wittenberg. He followed by picking up a win in relief in the second game of the series. The two wins helped Ohio Wesleyan earn the top seed in the West Division. He's the first Bishop pitcher to win both games of a doubleheader since 1989. From the other side of the plate he was 11-20 (.550) with six doubles, two homers and eight RBI. __________________________________________________________________________ April 21, 2003 GREGORY AND ALABURDA NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kenyon senior Jesse Gregory (Gainesville, FL/Eastside) was 5-13 (.385) in four games against Wooster, including a perfect 4-4 performance in game four of the series - the Lords' first win over the Scots since 1985, the first season of NCAC baseball. In game four, he cracked two home runs and had seven RBI. For the week, Gregory scored four runs, hit three homers and and drove in eight runs. He now owns the Lords' single-season home run mark with nine. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Wooster junior right-hander Justin Alaburda (Medina, OH/Walsh Jesuit) allowed just one earned run on 10 hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter in leading the Scots to their game-one victory over Kenyon. He pitched all seven innings for his third complete game of the season. Alaburda was the lone Wooster pitcher who saw action against Ohio State to not allow a run, as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning. __________________________________________________________________________ April 14, 2003 PORTER AND COWDEN NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Allegheny junior Brendon Porter, (Pittsburgh, PA/Franklin Regional) hit .556 and had a 1.444 slugging percentage with two homers and two doubles while going 5-9 from the plate. The infielder had five RBI and took four walks as the Gators went 3-0 in non-conference action. He had two home runs and four RBI in a 9-6 win over John Carroll and was perfect in the field in 27 chances. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Denison junior Cam Cowden (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) pitched 11 scoreless innings last week and went 2-0, running his season record to 5-2 with wins over Oberlin and Wabash. In two starts Cowden allowed just one run on 10 hits. He struck out 16 and improved his season ERA to 2.52. He leads the Big Red in strikeouts (53), innings pitched (50.0), wins (five) and is hitting .333 in 19 starts in the field. __________________________________________________________________________ April 7, 2003 MILLER AND DEWITT NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wooster junior Matt Miller (Millersburg, OH/Hiland) went 9-17 (.529) last week, including four doubles and a homer, and scored four runs while driving in eight others. Highlighting his week, Miller hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to give Wooster a 5-4 win over NCAA Division I Kent State. It was his second double of the game. Miller also hit a key home run against Mt. Vernon Nazarene, which tied the game 8-8 after Wooster had fallen behind (8-3), and added a 3-7 (.429), four-RBI performance in the doubleheader sweep of Wittenberg. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Oberlin junior Troy DeWitt (San Diego, CA/Bishop's School) picked up a win and two saves for Oberlin last week. In game one of the NCAC series against Kenyon, he threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout against Kenyon, fanning nine. He returned to the mound for a save in game three of the series. He also earned a save with three perfect innings against Case Western Reserve. In 11 innings of work, DeWitt allowed four hits and one earned run. He walked one batter and struck out 13. __________________________________________________________________________ March 31, 2003 O'REILLY AND SHARPLESS NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Earlham senior first-baseman Sean O'Reilley (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) went 12-22 from the plate with 10 RBI's and two home runs including Earlham's first of the season in an 8-7 win over Mount St. Joseph. O'Reilley helped the Quakers to a 3-3 week batting .545, also garnering four doubles and two walks. He also stole two bases. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Allegheny pitcher Josh Sharpless (Freedom, PA/Freedom) had a 2.25 ERA last week, striking out 16 and walking just four in 12.0 innings of work. The senior had a complete-game, three-hit effort against Kenyon for the win while striking out nine. Against Penn St.-Behrend, he had seven strike-outs in five scheduled innings of work. __________________________________________________________________________ March 24, 2003 MARZANO AND HORNE NAMED NCAC BASEBALL PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK Hiram junior outfielder Joe Marzano (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) batted .600 (6-10) in three games last week. He recorded one home run, four runs batted in and four runs scored. He is tied for the team lead with four homers and 15 RBI. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Wabash sophomore Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) threw a complete game, nine inning shutout of Olivet last week. The lefty scattered two hits and struck out five batters while walking only three to move his season record to 2-3 and lowering his ERA to 3.86. __________________________________________________________________________
