__________________________________________________________________________ May 7, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wooster senior Sheldon Steiner (Dalton, OH/Central Christian) batted .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, three doubles and five RBI in three games last week. In Wooster's two NCAC Tournament victories, he went 5-for-9 (.556) with two runs and two RBI while doubling in each game and walking once. He also took over the team lead in batting average (.396) last week. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan senior right-hander Sean Ring (Hilliard, OH/Davidson) limited Allegheny to two hits in 7.2 innings pitched, striking out six batters and walking two to help the Bishops advance to the championship series of the NCAC Baseball Tournament. He retired the last 15 batters he faced. __________________________________________________________________________ April 30, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kenyon senior third baseman Blaise Milburn (Sewickley, PA/Sewickley Academy) led the Lords in a split of their series with Allegheny. Milburn hit 5-for-10 (.500) with two doubles, and a home run. He also walked four times, scored seven times, drove in six RBI and had a .706 on-base percentage in the series. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan senior right hander Sean Ring (Hilliard, OH/Davidson) pitched a three-hitter to lead the Bishops to a division clinching 3-1 victory over Wittenberg. Ring did not allow a runner past second base during the final five innings, struck out two and walked two. __________________________________________________________________________ April 23, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Allegheny senior Jimmy Fernandez (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) paced the Gators' offensive output last week by going 14-of-16 (.875) with three doubles and a three-run home run, earning 20 total bases for a slugging percentage of 1.250 in four of the team's seven games. He also walked three times, taking his on-base percentage to .895. Fernandez tied for the team lead with 11 runs and also drove in 14 runs as the Gators went 6-1 on the week. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Earlham senior Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury) pitched seven innings to lead the Quakers to a 4-3 win over Denison, their first NCAC victory since 2003. Kinne worked a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, before the Big Red picked up three runs on two hits. Kinne struck out two batters in the complete-game victory. __________________________________________________________________________ April 16, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wittenberg senior Andrew Wellman (Huntington, WV/Huntington) drove in the winning run to lift the Tigers past nationally ranked Transylvania, 3-2. He capped his 5-for-5 evening with an eighth-inning single that completed a five-run Tiger rally to clinch the come-from-behind victory. Wellman reached base six straight times, adding a walk his totals. He also finished with one run and a double to his credit. Wellman made his second start since suffering a hamstring injury more than a month ago. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Wabash sophomore right-hander Joey Niezer (Batesville, IN/Oldenburg Academy) went 2-0 on the week, scattering four hits in 16 innings of work. He came on in relief to pick up a 10-7 win against North Park, throwing seven innings of relief while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. He gave up two hits and allowed one earned run. He then went the distance against previously undefeated Wooster, lifting the Little Giants past the Fighting Scots, 3-2. The victory snapped the Scots' 27- game winning streak, the longest in the nation and longest in Wooster school history. It is also the first win in 12 tries by Wabash against the Scots. Niezer allowed two hits in nine innings - giving up an infield hit in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the seventh. He struck out five, giving him 12 K's for the week. He also had four assists in the field, including throwing out a runner at the plate in the fourth inning to hold a two-run lead. He threw out a Scot pinch-hitter on a ground ball to his right in the seventh inning for the third out to preserve the lead. On the week, he allowed four hits, five runs (one earned) and walked six and hit six batters to set the Wabash and NCAC single-season record with his 21st HBP. __________________________________________________________________________ April 9, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wabash freshman Kyle Rush (Lafayette, IN/McCutcheon) went 5-for-6 (.833) as the Little Giants' leadoff hitter in a pair of NCAC victories over Earlham (16-4, 13-6). He had a double, three RBI, two stolen bases and scored five runs. Rush also walked once and had a sacrifice fly. He shares the NCAC lead for stolen bases with 13. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Hiram junior Mike Piechuta (Akron, OH/Springfield) earned a complete- game 5-1 win over Case Western Reserve, allowing one run on five hits with no walks. He struck out eight batters and had a 1.29 earned run average. __________________________________________________________________________ April 2, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City, OH/Dublin Scioto) was 11-for-17 (.647) for the week with eight runs scored, two doubles, two triples, three homers, nine RBI and 26 total bases. He registered a 1.529 slugging percentage over the six games, leading the Battling Bishops to a 5-1 week. In the four-game league series against Earlham, he paced the Bishops, hitting 10-for-13 (.769) with seven runs scored, a double, two triples, eight RBI and 24 total bases. The highlight of his week was the third and fourth games against the Quakers when he hit three homers. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Oberlin freshman Jack Dunn (Lake Havasu City, AZ/Lake Havasu) picked up two complete-game wins and a save, accouting for three of the Yeomen's six wins last week. He worked 16 innings, giving up 11 hits and two earned runs and racked up 16 strikeouts. __________________________________________________________________________ March 26, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ohio Wesleyan junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview PArk, OH/ Fairview) led the Battling Bishops to a 2-0 week, hitting 3-for-5 (.600) with a pair of three-run homers, six RBI and a walk in back-to- back wins over Wittenberg, 7-6 and 2-0, respectively. In the opener against Wittenberg, he staked the Bishops to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a three-run homer down the left-field line. He tied the game at 6-6 with his homer to right in the seventh. Wilkins was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Wooster junior lefty Adam Samson (Orrville, OH/Orrville) struck out a career-high 14, leading the Fighting Scots to a 7-2 win in the opening game of the Allegheny series. He went all seven innings, yielding seven hits and one walk. The 14 strikeouts tied for the third-most in a single game in Scot history. He also pitched one inning of a 13-2 Manchester victory, setting down all three batters he faced, including one by strikeout. __________________________________________________________________________ March 19, 2007 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wooster junior outfielder Jake Sankal (Mentor, OH/Mentor) homered three times in his first 10 at-bats of the spring, while also singling twice and doubling once for a .600 average (6-for-10) thus far. He has also produced seven RBI and helped the Fighting Scots to an 8-0 record last week. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Wooster sophomore righthander Anthony Trapuzzano (Pittsburgh, PA/Canevin Catholic) threw five shutout innings and struck out nine without a walk in leading the Scots to a 10-0 victory over Anderson in his first start. __________________________________________________________________________
