__________________________________________________________________________ November 16, 2003 Wooster junior Tony Sutton (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) and Earlham freshman Brandon Mock (Winchester, IN/Winchester) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Sutton, a 5-9, 190-pound running back, achieved four NCAC single-season records after he finished with 179 rushing yards and all five of the Fighting Scots' rushing touchdowns on a career-high 41 carries in a 35-31 loss to Wittenberg. His effort gave him season totals of 2,203 all-purpose yards, 1,955 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns, and 186 points to put him at No. 1 in the conference record book in all four categories. Mock, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive end, led the Quaker defense with five solo and three assisted tackles. He recorded three tackles for a total loss of 15 yards. He also forced one fumble, had a quarterback hurry and a quarterback sack for a loss of seven yards. __________________________________________________________________________ November 9, 2003 Allegheny senior Brian Woods (Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) and Ohio Wesleyan freshman Tom Thome (Macedonia, OH/Nordonia) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Woods, a 5-9, 168-pound wide receiver, broke one of Allegheny's oldest school records with 344 all-purpose yards against Earlham, eclipsing the previous mark of 316 set by Jay Lewis in 1969. He had four touchdowns in addition to 172 yards receiving on six receptions, 118 yards on punt returns, and 54 yards on kickoff returns. Woods returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown, his second punt return for a TD this season, and had touchdowns catches of 65, 59, and four yards. The 42-21 win clinched Allegheny's ninth NCAC football crown. Thome, a 6-0, 180-pound cornerback, led the Battling Bishop defense with seven tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. He also returned a kick for 32 yards. Thome led a defensive unit that held Oberlin to only 40 yards of total offense in the second half of the 24-7 OWU victory. __________________________________________________________________________ November 2, 2003 Allegheny senior Bubba Smith (Doylestown, Oh/Chippewa) and Oberlin senior Quammie Semper (Houston, TX/Waltrip) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Smith, a 6-0, 190-pound quarterback, threw three touchdowns to lead the Gators past Wittenberg 27-21. He finished the game 15-27 for 213 yards. He tossed the 49th TD pass of his carer, eclipsing the school record of 48. Semper, a 5-11, 175-pound defensive back, led the Yeomen defense with nine total tackles, two interceptions and two pass deflections. He recorded eight solo stops and returned one of his interceptions 80 yards for a touchdown. Semper totalled 110 yards on two interception returns. He now holds the NCAC single-season interception record with 10 and is second on the league's career list with 21. __________________________________________________________________________ October 26, 2003 Hiram sophomore Tim Anderson (Akron, OH/Central Hower) and Wabash sophomore Josh Foster (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Anderson, a 5-10, 205-pound running back, rushed for a school-record 224 yards on a career-high 38 carries, leading Hiram to a 34-7 victory over Kenyon on Cleveland Browns Legends Day. The sophomore doubled his season total to 445 yards rushing and now ranks fifth in the NCAC with an average of 74.2 yards per game. Foster, a 6-0, 163-pound linebacker, led the Little Giants as they held Oberlin to 71 yards of total offense. He totalled six tackles, with two solos, one for a loss of four yards, shared a sack and had one quarterback hurry. In all, Wabash recorded eight tackles for losses of 46 yards, and four sacks. __________________________________________________________________________ October 19, 2003 Denison junior Phil Bouwhis (Grand Rapids, MI/West Catholic) and Allegheny senior Mike Soltis (Albion, PA/Northwestern) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Bouwhis, a 5-7, 197-pound running back, rushed for a career-high 225 yards on 33 carries and scored two touchdowns leading Denison to a 28-17 Homecoming victory over Earlham. He scored on runs of 42 and eight yards. On the season, Bouwhuis has gained 711 yards on 135 carries for a team-high 5.3 yards per carry. He is second amongst NCAC rushers, averaging 118.5 yards per game. Soltis, a 6-0, 220-pound defensive tackle, registered three of the Gators' six sacks in a 26-20 win over Wooster. The mark is one sack shy of the Allegheny single-game record and is a career-high for Soltis. He added three solo and five assisted tackles and finished the game with three and one-half tackles for losses totalling 15 yards. __________________________________________________________________________ October 12, 2003 Ohio Wesleyan freshman Nick Rice (Dublin, OH/Scioto) and Oberlin junior Ryan Drews (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Rice, a 5-11, 170-pound halfback, scored three touchdowns and ran for 202 yards on 29 carries to lead Ohio Wesleyan past Earlham, 29-14. He is the first Bishop to top 200 yards in a game since 1998. Rice scored on runs of two and five yards as OWU took a 13-0 lead. He then scored on a two-yard run after the Quakers came within 13-7. He also caught one pass for 13 yards. Drews, a 5-10, 200-pound punter, set an NCAC record with a 79-yard punt in the fourth quarter against Wooster. He placed three punts inside the 20-yard line on the day and averaged 39.7 yards over seven attempts. The Yeomen topped the Scots, 14-7, for the first time in 17 tries. __________________________________________________________________________ October 5, 2003 Earlham sophomore Justin Rummell (Ingalls, IN/Pendleton Hts.) and Oberlin senior Quammie Semper (Houston, TX/Waltrip) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Rummell, a 6-2, 200-pound quarterback, threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns, one short of the school record for touchdowns in a game. He connected for scores of 91, 7 and 22 yards as the Quakers won for the first time this season with a 35-10 decision over Kenyon. Semper, a 5-11, 175-pound defensive back, snagged two interceptions and recorded five solo tackles as the Yeomen won their NCAC opener, a 24-12 decision over Hiram. Semper leads the conference this season with five interceptions in four games. __________________________________________________________________________ September 28, 2003 Wooster junior Tony Sutton (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) and Wabash sophomore T.T. Jackson (Evansville, IN/Evansville Harrison) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Sutton, a 5-9, 190-pound running back, broke his own NCAC records for rushing yards in a game (338) and rushing touchdowns in a game (six) in leading Wooster. He carried the ball 34 times, surpassing last fall's 313 rushing yards and five TDs against Ohio Wesleyan. Four of Sutton's touchdowns came in the second half, as he led Wooster back from a 33-20 halftime deficit. Sutton has eclipsed the 2,000-yard rushing mark (2,079) in just his 12th career game. Jackson, a 5-11, 183-pound linebacker, had a career day against Huntingdon. He recorded career bests in tackles (10) and sacks (1.5) and also snagged his first career interception. His 10 total tackles, and five solo stops, led the Little Giants who finished with six sacks for 48 yards. __________________________________________________________________________ September 21, 2003 Wooster junior Tony Sutton (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) and Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Cisco Clervoix (Naples, FL/Naples) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Sutton, a 5-9, 190-pound running back, amassed 295 all-purpose yards, highlighted by 193 rushing on 15 carries and an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, marking the first time a Wooster player scored on a kickoff return since 1991. Overall, Sutton scored four touchdowns. Sutton leads the NCAC with an average of 161.5 yards rushed per game. Clervoix, a 5-11, 200-pound defensive end, recorded seven tackles - one for a loss - against Denison. He set up the Bishops gamewinning drive with a forced fumble on the OWU 21-yard line that preserved a 10-10 tie in the fourth quarter. __________________________________________________________________________ September 14, 2003 Allegheny senior Bubba Smith (Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) and Wittenberg sophomore Yusef Abdul-Zahir (Canton, OH/McKinley) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Smith, a 6-0, 190-pound quarterback, set career highs for completions and attempts against Washington & Jefferson, going 32-46 for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Smith led the Gator offense to 425 total yards. In two games this season, he has five touchdowns and one interception for a 133.98 efficiency rating - third best amongst NCAC quarterbacks. Abdul-Zahir, a 5-11, 185-pound safety, led a Tiger defense which held Urbana to a scoreless second-half in a 28-12, come-from-behind win. He totalled 15 tackles, including three on special teams. He had one tackle for a loss of two yards and recorded one pass deflection. __________________________________________________________________________ September 7, 2003 Wittenberg junior Raymar Hampshire (Lima, OH/Elida) and Wooster junior Ryan Jayne (East Palestine, OH/East Palestine) have been named offensive and defensive "Players of the Week" for their performances last week in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Hampshire, a 6-1, 195-pound fullback, the lone returning starter in the Tiger offensive backfield, led Wittenberg to a 34-7 win over Albion, rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He helped the Tigers to their ninth straight season-opening win. Jayne, a 5-9, 170-pound cornerback, stepped in front of a Hope pass at the goal line on third-and-goal, then raced down the right sidelines for a 100- yard interception return for a touchdown – the longest in school history. His decisive play clinched the Scots' 45-36 win over Hope. __________________________________________________________________________
