Edited: Feb. 7, 2010 Wooster (12-0, 17-4) has clinched at least a share of its record sixth consecutive NCAC championship. The six titles in a row bests Wittenberg’s run of five outright or shared titles from 1990-1994. The Fighting Scots are one win away from taking this year’s title outright and have two chances to clinch this coming week. They travel to fifth-place (tie) Hiram (7-5, 10-11) on Wednesday and return home to square off against second-place (tie) Wittenberg (8-4, 16-5) on Saturday. Wittenberg, Wabash (8-4, 13-7) and Allegheny (8-4, 11-9) enter the week tied for second. The Tigers host Earlham (1-11, 3-18) on Wednesday, in addition to their tilt at Wooster this weekend. The Little Giants travel to fifth-place (tie) Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday and host eighth-place (tie) Oberlin (2-10, 6-15) on Saturday. The Gators head to Oberlin midweek and to seventh-place Denison (5-7, 5-16) on the weekend. ALLEGHENY went 1-1 last week, dropping an 85-72 decision to Wooster before defeating Kenyon, 68-53. George Raftis (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) finished with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Gators against the Fighting Scots. He added a double-double in the win over the Lords with 12 points and 15 rebounds ... DENISON freshman Dimonde Hale (Columbus, OH/Northland) averaged 25 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Big Red went 1-1 with a win over Earlham, 74-61, and a loss to Hiram, 71-62. Junior Larry Farmer (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) averaged a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards per outing ... A.J. Sutherlin (Crawfordsville, IN / North Montgomery) posted a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds as EARLHAM fell to Wabash, 70-42. Sutherlin added 11 points and eight boards in a 74-61 loss to Denison ... HIRAM had two players score in double figures in a 71-62 win over Denison. Junior guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland, OH/Kennedy) had 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while junior Glenn Campbell (Akron, OH/Buchtel) was second with 15 points ... KENYON freshman Marcus Healey (Yardley, PA/Penncrest) hit 11 of his 24 attempts from beyond the three-point arc and tallied 35 points in losses to Oberlin, 66-55, and to Allegheny, 68-53 ... OBERLIN upended Kenyon on the road for the second straight season, this time by a 66-55 score. The victory was the Yeomen’s sixth this winter, the most since they went 9-16 in 2001-02. Freshman Andrew Fox (Tempe, AZ/Corona Del Sol) recorded his fifth double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Kenyon. He then netted 15 points and seven boards in a 69-54 loss to Ohio Wesleyan ... OHIO WESLEYAN sophomore wing Tim Brady (Dublin, OH/Jerome) led the Battling Bishops with 23 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to post his first collegiate double-double in an 82-75 loss against Wittenberg. He also set the pace in a 69-54 win over Oberlin with a career-high 29 points and three steals. For the week, he shot 22-for-38 from the floor, including 6-for-7 from the line. He collected 11 boards, two blocks and three steals ... WABASH junior Ben Burkett (Crawfordsville, IN/Southmont) scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 70-42 win over Earlham. Then Aaron Brock’s (Bremen, IN/Bremen) three free throws with 41 seconds left to play tied Wabash and Wooster at 59-59, but the Fighting Scots outscored the Little Giants 5-2 in the closing minute to escape with a 64-61 victory. Brock finished with 20 points and eight rebounds ... WITTENBERG senior guard David Nowicki (Carmel, IN/Carmel) averaged 11 points and a team-best 7.5 rebounds in a pair of Tiger wins. He shot 4-of-5 from the floor, 3-of-4 from long range and 11-of-14 from the line, including four straight in the final 25 seconds to seal an 82-75 win over Ohio Wesleyan. He also totalled nine assists to just three turnovers. Wittenberg also topped Hiram, 66-58 ... WOOSTER junior post Bryan Wickliffe (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) combined for 29 points and 20 rebounds in a pair of NCAC victories last week. He recorded his second double-double this season with 19 points and 14 rebounds in an 83-72 win over Allegheny. He scored the Fighting Scots’ first eight points and finished 8-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line. He then scored 10 points on 5-of-7 field goals in a 64-61 win over Wabash. He added six boards. |
