WITTENBERG WINS SECOND STRAIGHT NORTH COAST TITLE; LOVE, DENNING EARN TOP INDIVIDUAL HONORS GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Wittenberg won six events and posted 13 top-three finishes on the way to its second consecutive team title at the 1997 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at Denison's Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center. Wittenberg totaled 149 points to 99 for second-place Wooster, which improved six positions and 60 points from last season to earn Coach of the Year honors for Dennis Rice. The Scots won three events and had six top-three finishes. Ohio Wesleyan won two events and placed third with 84 points, followed by Allegheny (77.5) in fourth, Denison (49) in fifth and Kenyon (47.5), Oberlin (42), CWRU (36) and Earlham (34) in spots six through nine, respectively. Wittenberg was led by junior Jason Love (Columbus, OH/St. Charles), who repeated as Most Outstanding Field Performer and added the title of Most Outstanding Sprinter after winning three individual events. Love defended his title in the long jump (22' 10") in addition to wins in the 55 (6.59) and 300 (35.33), breaking an NCAC record in the latter. He also placed second in the triple jump and anchored the first-place 4x200 relay (1:33.48). The Tigers' other wins came from junior Bart Lubbers (Columbus, OH/Worthington) in the triple jump (44' 5-1/2") and senior Scott Rickel (Port Clinton, OH/Port Clinton) in the 400 (50.29). Wooster's top performances came from junior Tony Kauke (Oakland, CA/Alhambra), who set a North Coast record in winning the 800 (1:57.5), and freshman Tim Sir Louis (Medina, OH/Highland), who won the pole vault (13' 6"). The Scots also won the distance medley relay (10:40.47). Kenyon junior Dan Denning (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) won the 3000 (8:55.3) and 5000 (15:18.3) to earn Most Outstanding Distance Runner honors. The event's remaining individual wins went to Allegheny juniors Jim Mormino (Mayfield Heights, OH/Mayfield) in the shot put (47' 6-1/4") and Chris Haberer (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) in the high jump (6' 5"), Denison sophomore Eric Nigh (Cheyenne, WY/Central) in the 1500 (4:02.64) and Ohio Wesleyan sophomore David Spring (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) in the 55 hurdles (8.00).FINAL NCAC MEN'S TEAM STANDINGS 1.
