Edited: May 4, 2009 The 36th NCAA Division III Championships will take place Thursday through Saturday, May 21-23, at Marietta College. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event. The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are filled from the descending order list of provisional qualifiers on May 18. Women’s Most Valuable Performers: Oberlin junior Madeline Schultz (Concord, MA/Carlisle) was named the Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year. Schultz won the heptathlon (4386 points) and 400-meter hurdles (1:04.92), was part of the champion 1600-meter relay and the second-place 400-meter relay, and was third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.62). Denison sophomore Katie Navarre (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) was named the Middle Distance/Distance Runner of the Year after she won the 5,000 meters in NCAA provisional qualifying time (17:12.51) as well as the 10,000 meters in conference meet record time (36:01.69). Ohio Wesleyan junior Sharon Rymut (Broadview Hts., OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) was named Field Athlete of the Year after she won the discus (118 feet even) and hammer (134 feet, 6 inches). Men’s Most Valuable Performers: Ohio Wesleyan senior Preston Osborn (Edgerton, OH/Edgerton) was named Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year after he won the 400-meter hurdles in conference meet record time (53.44) and was part of the champion 4x400-meter relay. Allegheny junior Tony Dipre (Twinsburg, OH/Walsh Jesuit) was named Middle Distance/Distance Runner of the Year as he won the 1500 meters in NCAA provisional qualifying time (3:54.19). Earlham junior Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Hts.) was selected Field MVP after he successfully defended his NCAC title in the discus (NCAA provisional 159-0), was fourth in the shot put (47-7) and seventh in the hammer (123-4). Coach of the Year: Ohio Wesleyan head coach Kris Boey earned his second straight men’s coach of the year recognition after leading the Battling Bishops to the men’s crown for the second consecutive year. He was also named women’s coach of the year for the second time, guiding OWU to its second title in the past three seasons. |
