A goal scored in the 71st minute proved to be the difference as Transylvania upended NCAC Champion Ohio Wesleyan (18-2-2), 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 15. The Battling Bishops outshot the Pioneers, 21-8, but were unable to break through. OWU was shut out for the second time this season, the first being a 0-0 tie with Case Western Reserve on Sept. 30.

North Coast Athletic Conference champion Ohio Wesleyan (18-1-2) received a first-round bye and will host Transylvania (15-3-1), from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, in a second-round contest at 6:00 p.m. today. The Battling Bishops are making their 30th NCAA playoff appearance in 32 years and their NCAA-record 32nd overall. They have won an NCAA-record 51 Div. III playoff games. Ohio Wesleyan won the 1998 national championship and finished as runner-up in 1990 and 1992. OWU met Transylvania in the first round of the 2007 NCAA tournament; the Pioneers and Bishops tied 1-1 and Transylvania advanced on penalty kicks, 6-5. The winner of today’s second-round game will advance to a four-team sectional tournament to be held Nov. 20-21 or Nov. 21-22 on the campus of one of the competing institutions. Sectional winners advance to the semifinals and championship, set for December 4-5 at Blossom Sports Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
NCAC tournament champion Denison (12-5-3) made its ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red suffered a 3-0 loss to Medaille in the first round. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) ended his four-year career by starting every possible game and logging 6,818 minutes in goal. He posted a 1.00 goals against average this season.
The NCAC has had at least one team in the NCAA tournament field since the conference began in 1984, highlighted by a four-team contingent (Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan, Wittenberg and Wooster) in 1992.
