Edited: April 27, 2009 Kenyon (3-0, 19-7) swept three opponents, 15-0, on the way to its third straight and 12th overall team title at the NCAC tournament hosted by the Lords, April 24-25 [click for complete results]. The Lords, seeded first in the East Division, went past Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg in the early rounds. Kenyon capped its championship run with a victory over Denison, the top seed from the West, in the finals. The Big Red defeated Oberlin, 5-0, and Wabash, 5-0, before falling to Kenyon. Wabash captured third with a 5-2 win over Wittenberg in the consolation finals, the Little Giants' best showing since beginning NCAC play in the spring of 2000. Kenyon's 12 NCAC men's championships ties the Lords with Denison. Wooster has won or shared four North Coast men's tennis championships. The Lords, the eighth-ranked team in Division III, have earned the North Coast's automatic bid into the NCAA III Men's Tennis tournament and has the potential to host first- and second-round matches. The pairings and sites are expected to be announced Monday, May 4. Notes: EARLHAM ended the season with a 4-10 record. Sophomore Michael Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) led the Quakers with a 3-8 mark at No. 1 singles and combined with freshman Nabil Parker (London, England/International) to go a team-best 4-7 at No. 1 doubles ... KENYON swept to its third consecutive and 12th overall North Coast title with a trio of 5-0 decisions in the NCAC tournament. Junior William VandenBerg (Milwaukee, WI/University School) provided match-clinching singles victories in both the semifinal and championship rounds. He also posted a pair of doubles wins over the weekend ... OHIO WESLEYAN dropped its first NCAC tourney match, 5-0 to eventual champion Kenyon, but bounced back to win twice and claim fifth place. It is the highest finish for the Battling Bishops since 2003. Junior Brandon Luttinger (Hingham, MA/Hingham) was a double winner in both victories ... WABASH ended the year with an 11-16 record, and was third in the tournament, the Little Giants' highest standing since joining the league in 2000. Senior Jay Horrey (New Albany, IN/New Albany) picked up two singles wins in the conference championship, and ends his career with a school-record 73 singles and 67 doubles wins ... WITTENBERG wound up fourth in the North Coast after edging Allegheny, 5-4, in the first round, then falling to champ Kenyon, 5-0, and third-place Wabash, 5-2 ... WOOSTER took sixth place as it fell to Wabash, 5-4, defeated Oberlin, 5-0, and then fell to Ohio Wesleyan, 5-4. The Fighting Scots end the year with a 15-8 dual-match record. |
