DENISON UPSETS KENYON FOR FIRST NORTH COAST
TITLE; LAZARUS, ZURN EARN INDIVIDUAL HONORS

OBERLIN, Ohio -- One day after the anniversary of the St. Valentine Massacre, turbulence and the unthinkable hit the North Coast Athletic Conference as Denison abruptly halted 17-time defending national champion Kenyon's streak of 43 consecutive conference championships (including the last 12 in the NCAC). Denison became the first team other than Kenyon to claim a men's or women's North Coast swimming & diving crown as it bested the Lords by 19 points at the 13th NCAC Championships, held Feb. 13-15 at Oberlin's Robert K. Carr Pool.

Denison won just four individual titles to Kenyon's eight, but the Big Red's depth proved to be too much. Denison parlayed four individual crowns, one relay title and 20 other top-three finishes into 932 points. Kenyon added four relay wins and totaled 913 points to take second place, followed by Wooster (460) and Oberlin (312) in third and fourth for the third straight season. Ohio Wesleyan (311), Allegheny (233), Wittenberg (220) and CWRU (200) complete the standings in places five through eight.

Denison, which had placed second 11 times over the past 12 years, was led by senior Tom Richner (Richmond Heights, OH/St. Ignatius), who repeated as champion in the 100 fly (51.34) and 100 back (52.91). Richner was joined by juniors Brian Herlihy (Mission Viejo, CA/Santa Margarita) and Jeff Fellows (Austin, TX/Westlake), who touched first in the 200 free (1:42.38) and 400 medley (4:07.24), respectively. The Big Red also won the 200 medley relay (1:35.12) and picked up a pair of second-place finishes from sophomore Matt Trumbull (Toledo, OH/Northview).

Wittenberg shared the precedence-setting headlines as sophomore Julien Lazarus (Moens, France) became the first Tiger to claim NCAC Swimmer of the Year honors. Lazarus was a triple winner, setting a conference record in the 200 medley (1:54.42) to go with victories in the 100 breast (57.63) and 200 breast (2:06.97). Other North Coast records were set by Kenyon juniors Pedro Monteiro (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Newton South (MA)) in the 200 fly (1:48.41) and Nathan Gardner (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge) in the 200 back (1:52.15). Kenyon senior Derek Zurn (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) won the one-meter (507.00) and three-meter diving (475.00) to merit Diver of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.

The list of individual winners also includes Kenyon senior David Phillips (Kent, OH/Roosevelt), who successfully defended his titles in the 500 free (4:39.52) and 1650 free (16:04.77); Kenyon junior Justin Thoms (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander), who defended his title in the 50 free (21.18); and another Kenyon junior, Ken Heis (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin), who won the 100 free (46.54).
