2010 NCAC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP
SET FOR FEBRUARY 11-13 IN CANTON The Denison men's and women's squads are the defending champions. The Denison men are the only team to have beaten the Lords in the NCAC meet when they claimed titles in 1997 and 2009, while the Denison women snapped the Ladies' 19-year hold on the crown in 2004 and took it again last winter. Kenyon has won 23 of the 25 NCAC crowns contested in both men's and women's competition. DENISON has two-time NCAC Swimmer of the Year Olivia Zaleski (Corry, PA/Corry Area) as the top returnee among all swimmers at the 2010 North Coast championships. She is a two-time defending champion in the 100 butterfly, and a one-time defending champ in the 50 free and 100 back. Sophomore Hillary Callen (Oswego, NY/Oswego) not only won both the 500 and 1650 freestyles as a freshman, but also set a conference record in the former. Other event champions who are back to defend their North Coast titles are sophomores Laurel Brabson (Boonsboro, MD/Boonsboro) in the 200 fly and Emily Schroeder (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) in the 200 back. Freshman Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, CO/Regis Jesuit) is a contender in the sprint freestyles. KENYON senior Tina Ertel (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle) is a six-time all-conference performer and four-time event champion. She was named NCAC Swimmer of the Year in 2007. Junior Kaitlyn Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) is the defending champion in the 200 free after placing second in the event two years ago, and is a six-time all-conference swimmer. Sophomore Kellyn Caldwell (Gambier, OH/Mt. Vernon) is the defending champion in both individual medleys, and holds the conference record in the 400 IM. Sophomore Alisha Vereschagin (Solon, OH/Solon) returns as the defending champ, and the NCAC-record holder in the 200 breastroke. ALLEGHENY freshman Ariana Lyons (Plainfield, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) is a contender in the 50 free and 100 freestyles. Junior Megan Knox (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) is a solid performer in the distance freestyles, and should score in the 1650 free. Junior Ashley Whitehead (Conneaut Lake, PA/Meadville Area) and sophomore Christine Smith (Henderson, NV/Cornado) are swimmers to watch in the sprints and distance events, respectively. WOOSTER freshman Kate Hunt (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) could score in the sprints as she ranks among the NCAC's top times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. Freshman Caroline Hanson (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) is a swimmer to watch in the breaststroke and distance freestyle. Freshman Samira El-Adawy (Cairo, Egypt/Lycée du Sacré Coeur) and sophomore Melissa Haug (Lexington, KY/Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study) are potential point-scorers in the individual medley. El-Adawy is a contender in the backstroke, while Haug could also contribute in the butterfly. WITTENBERG junior diver Megan Subitowski (Columbus, OH/Watterson), who earned all-NCAC honors after she finished third in three-meter diving last winter, is back. Sophomore Rachel Lee (Hickory, NC/Hickory) has the North Coast's best time in the 200 free, while freshman Ward McNulty (Glencoe, IL/New Trier) is among the conference leaders in the 50 free and 100 free. Sophomore Megan Tassone (Cincinnati, OH/Ursuline) has an NCAC top-10 time in both breaststroke events and classmate Keaton Hannon (Peachtree City, GA/McIntosh) is a contender in the butterfly. OBERLIN freshman sensation Grace Aheron ( Roanoke, VA/ Patrick Henry) is a contender to earn all-conference honors in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as she has the league's second-best and third-best times, respectively, in those events entering the championship. She could also score in the 100 fly and 400 IM, and is a strong distance freestyler. Junior Sara Kadi (Oakland, CA/Piedmont) should score in the butterfly and the sprint freestyle. Senior Laura Fries (Bow, NH/Bow) is having a fine season in the backstroke. OHIO WESLEYAN senior diver Erin Hanahan (Madison, OH/Perry) is having a strong season. She has an excellent chance for a repeat all-conference performance on the one-meter board, and could challenge on the three-meter board as well. Senior Kendra Klosssner (Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) is the Battling Bishops' top threat in the sprints and backstroke. Junior Marisa Obuchowski (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) will contribute in the breaststroke and IM, and sophomore Marina Metzler (Columbia, MD/Hammond) is the team's top swimmer in the butterfly. HIRAM is led by senior Katie Pierdomenico (Stow, OH/Twinsburg), who is the team's top sprint freestyler. Juniors Kelsey Covell (Parma Hts., OH/Valley Forge) and Mackenzie Saywell (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland) and senior Gillian Millwood (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College) are other leading swimmers for the Terriers. DENISON sophomore Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) is the defending champion in the 400 IM and was all-conference in the 200 fly in 2009. Sophomore Robert Barry (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's School) is the defending champion in the 200 back after he set the conference mark in the event last winter. Junior Jake Lewing (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) is a contender in the breaststroke and individual medley. The Big Red are traditionally strong in the diving events. Sophomore Philip Meyer (River Forest, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) and junior Cody Smith (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) are both returning all-conference divers who aim to keep that history intact. KENYON sophomore Zachary Turk (Strongsville, OH/St. Edward) is one of Division III's best sprint freestylers in 2009-10. He was an All-NCAC performer in the 50 free as a freshman, and has the nation's top effort in the event this year. Junior Michael Mpitsos (Newport, OR/Newport) appears to be the swimmer to beat in the backstroke events. He was runner-up in both events last season and third in both two years ago. Sophomore Joseph Pysnik (Murraysville, PA/Franklin Regional) is a leading contender in the butterfly and distance freestyle. Senior Kegan Borland (Vandergrift, PA/St. Joseph) and junior Nathaniel Smith (Knoxville, TN/Central) are each returning all-conference performers in the distance freestyle. Borland is a two-time defending champion in the 1650. WITTENBERG is led by seniors Neil Anderson (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) and Taylor Smith (Mansfield, OH/Senior). Anderson is the Tigers' top contender in the sprints and backstroke, while Smith excels in the distance freestyles and butterfly. Junior Chris Culkin (Novi, MI/Northville) is another distance freestyler who could score. This season, senior diver Matt Erenpreiss (Columbus, OH/Centennial) set the school record in the one-meter diving. WABASH junior Evan Rhinesmith (McCordsville, IN/Mt. Vernon) is among the North Coast elite in the breaststroke and could also score in the individual medley. Senior Craig Vetor (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) has posted the Little Giants' best times in every freestyle event from the 50 to the 500. Junior Eric Vaughn (Burlington, Ontario/Peters Twp.) is a contender in the backstroke, while juniors David Birrer (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) and Adam Current (Veedersburg, IN/Fountain Central) are threats in the butterfly. A trio of seniors lead WOOSTER into the 2010 NCAC Championships. Eric Babbitt (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) is a Fighting Scot leader in the sprints and butterfly. Ryan Radtke (Willoughby, OH/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) has been a reliable performer in the distance freestyle and individual medleys. Logan LaBerge (Towson, MD/Towson) has the potential to score in the 200 and 500 freestyles as well as the backstroke. Freshman sensation Brandon Intrieri (Erie, PA/McDowell) is ALLEGHENY'S top threat in the sprints and the butterfly. Veterans Ashton Kinney (Sewickley, PA/Sewickley Academy) and Josh Sesek (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood), both seniors, are contenders in their respective specialties. Kinney is among the top distance freestylers in the conference, while Sesek leads in the breaststroke and individual medley. Freshman Brandon Staley (Niles, OH/Liberty) and sophomore Mirno Pasquali (Laconia, NH/Laconia) are swimmers to watch in the distance free and backstroke, respectively. Versatile OBERLIN sophomore Nick Lashway (Leeds, MA/Northhampton) tops the list of swimmers for the Yeomen. He could score in the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly or individual medley. Freshman James Foust (Madison, WI/Madison West) could score in the sprints. Junior Jon Vimr (Savoy, IL/Champaign Central) is a swimmer to watch in the backstroke, while sophomore Dimitri Macris (Woodlands, TX/Woodlands College Park) will contribute in distance events. Senior David Gatz (Delaware, OH/Hayes) heads the list of standouts for OHIO WESLEYAN. He is the defending NCAC champion in both breaststroke events, and is a contender in both again this year. He could also score in the butterfly and individual medley. Senior Kevin Fahey (Delaware, OH/Hayes) will contribute in the IM, while sophomore Nathan Eckersley (Lyndhurst, OH/Mayfield) is a potential scorer in the distance events. Three HIRAM juniors lead the Terriers into the 2010 North Coast meet. Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) has the team's top effort in the 50 free, and could also compete in the fly and IM. Travis Subda (Spring, TX/Klein Collins) has been a consistent scorer in the breaststroke and sprints. Zach Wegman (Knoxville, TN/Bereon) has carried the team in distance events and contributed in the backstroke, butterfly and IM. |
