HIRAM COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF WOMEN'S GOLF FOR 2003-2004;
MCDONNELL NAMED HEAD COACH

HIRAM, Ohio -- Women’s golf will become Hiram College’s 20th varsity intercollegiate sport, beginning with the 2003-2004 school year. In addition, the sport will be the 10th offered for female student-athletes at Hiram. The announcement was made by Hiram’s Director of Athletics and Exercise/Sport Science Tom Mulligan on Monday, August 4.

“We are very excited about the addition of women’s golf to our athletics program,” said Mulligan. “Women’s golf is one of the more rapidly growing sports, in terms of popularity, throughout the country and we are both proud and happy to be able to add it and create another opportunity for competition for our female student-athletes.”

Hiram will become one of just two schools in the North Coast Athletic Conference to offer women’s golf as a varsity sport. Wittenberg University announced the addition of the sport this past January and will also begin competition this year.

“To be one of the first institutions in the NCAC, a conference with such a great athletic tradition, is something we are very proud of,” added Mulligan.

The NCAC currently sponsors championships in 11 women’s sports- the most offered by any NCAA Division III conference. The NCAC is also the first conference in any division of the NCAA to emphasize the equity of women’s sports in its constitutional bi-laws.

“Hiram’s addition of women’s golf shows great leadership on the part of the school’s administration and is indicative of the strong support of women’s athletics by our member institutions over the past 20 years,” said NCAC Executive Director Dennis Collins. Founded in 1983, the NCAC is beginning its 20th year of competition this fall.

The women’s golf team at Hiram will be coached by Sean McDonnell, currently the Terriers’ men’s basketball coach and a golf instructor in the Exercise/Sport Science department.

“Coach McDonnell is someone who has a wealth of knowledge about the sport of golf and someone we feel can be a great teacher to our student-athletes,” Mulligan said. “We are excited that he has chosen to accept this responsibility and look forward to great things from our team.”
