Edited: February 24, 2003 NCAC PRESIDENTS TO OPT OUT OF U.S. NEWS ATHLETICS SURVEY “While we are certainly proud of our athletics programs, NCAC members have joined together as a conference because they share a common allegiance to academic quality and the position of amateur athletics as a support to our educational purpose,“ Tipson continued. “As a result, we feel that a ranking of college athletics programs by U.S. News & World Report is not in the best interest of our conference as it would tend to unnaturally distill athletics from the greater experience offered by each of our colleges.” U.S. News first contacted NCAC colleges through their sports information directors, with the stated intent of ranking NCAA Division III athletic programs. More recently, however, U.S. News has asserted that it intends to offer the collected information on its web site as a service to readers. No assurance has been provided that the publication will not use this information to rank colleges now, or in the future. The NCAC acknowledges that several of its sports information directors have completed the U.S. News’ survey. The conference presidents, having recently learned of the survey and its purposes, have made a decision not to participate. This action by the NCAC Presidents supports and follows the recent announcement by the 11-member New England Small College Athletic Conference to decline participation in the same survey. The NCAC is composed of 10 institutions across Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Members include Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster. |
