  • Denison Names Mike Deegan Head Baseball Coach

    Denison University Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Nan Carney-DeBord has announced the hiring of Mike Deegan as the Big Red's head baseball coach and professor of physical education. Deegan comes to DU after serving as the Associate Head Coach at Marietta College for the past nine seasons.

    Recent Kenyon College graduate and former Lords catcher Jack Graham (Fairfield, CT/Ludlowe) was drafted Wednesday by the Baltimore Orioles in the 38th round of Major League Baseball's 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Overall, Graham was the 1,152nd pick of the 40-round draft.

    Kenyon junior Tyler Dierke (Hudson, WI/Hudson) and recent Oberlin senior Jason James (Lakewood, CO/Mullen) were both third-team selections on the 2012 Div. III Capital One Academic All-American Team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 30th.

    The baseball season in the North Coast officially came to a close last week in the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. DePauw (34-14) won its first game of the Central Regional held in Millington, Tennessee, against Emory, 2-0, but was eliminated from the tournament field after dropping back-to-back games against Webster, 10-2, and Illinois Wesleyan, 6-0. Wooster (27-18) saw its season come to a close at the Mideast Regional held in Marietta, Ohio, after losing a pair of contests against Adrian, 8-4, and Washington & Jefferson, 8-0.

    Wooster (27-16), which claimed its 14th all-time North Coast Athletic Conference baseball championship and the conference’s automatic bid, will be joined by DePauw (33-12) in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament after the Tigers earned an at-large invitation.
  • NCAC Lands Three Baseball Players On 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Squad

    Three North Coast Athletic Conference baseball players were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kenyon junior Tyler Dierke (Hudson, WI/Hudson) was joined on the first team by a pair of Oberlin Yeomen, including senior Jason James (Lakewood, CO/Mullen) and sophomore Mike McDonald (Weston, CT/Weston). As members of the Academic All-District first team, Dierke, James and McDonald will now advance to the Academic All-America Ballot. The Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

    Wabash senior first baseman John Holm (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) and Wooster senior pitcher Josh Stidham (Monclova, OH/Anthony Wayne) have been named the Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, to highlight the 2012 All-North Coast Athletic Conference baseball selections.

    The College of Wooster captured its 14th all-time North Coast Athletic Conference baseball championship with an 8-6 victory over DePauw in game 7 of the 2012 NCAC Baseball Tournament on Saturday at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. With the victory, the Fighting Scots have earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Div. III Baseball Tournament.

    The final spot for the 2012 NCAC Baseball Tournament is still up for grabs as Allegheny (10-4, 17-19) and Wooster (10-4, 22-14) are tied for second in the NCAC East Division; however, the tie will be broken on Tuesday evening as Allegheny travels to Wooster for the final NCAC doubleheader of the regular season The complete tournament bracket with seeds and game time information will be announced on Tuesday (May 1st) evening following the completion of the Allegheny/Wooster doubleheader. DePauw (12-4, 30-10), Kenyon (13-3, 27-10) and Ohio Wesleyan (9-7, 22-16) have already secured berths into the tournament.

    The DePauw University baseball team (12-2, 29-7) dropped four spots to No. 15 on the D3baseball.com poll and three spots to No. 14 on the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) National Poll. The Tigers clinched a berth in the NCAC Baseball Tournament and have equaled the second-most wins in a season with 29 after splitting four games with non-conference foe Case.

  • Wooster's Cunningham-Rhoads Named NCBWA National Pitcher Of The Week

    Wooster senior right-hander Kyle Cunningham-Rhoads (Kalamazoo, MI/Central) was named the NCAA Div. III National Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 9-15 as voted by a panel of Div. III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Cunningham-Rhoads earned the honor after tossing the second perfect game in school history after setting down all 21 Hiram batters he faced in a 16-0 victory over the Terriers.

    The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) has two baseball squads ranked among the nation's best. DePauw, 16-3, is ranked No. 18 after totaling 92 points in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top 25 and is ranked No. 21 after receiving 151 votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25. Wooster, 8-4, appeared in the “Also receiving votes” section with two votes in the D3baseball.com poll and were joined by Ohio Wesleyan in the “Also receiving votes” section in the ABCA poll.

    Hiram went 4-4 last week during its spring break trip in Florida. Offensively, the Terriers were led by senior catcher Randy Miller (Glenmont, OH/West Holmes) who hit .467 (14-of-30) on the week with two doubles, one triple, eight RBI and five runs scored.

Freshman Jake Dunn (Fairfield, CT/St. Georges) was a bright spot for the Lords as he debuted with five hits, including three doubles, in nine at-bats for a .556 average in the series.
