  • Wittenberg Names McGee As Baseball Coach

    Wittenberg University has announced the hiring of Brian McGee as the head coach of the Tigers baseball program. McGee arrives in Springfield after spending the past nine seasons at Lake Erie College, where he served as head coach.

    A 2003 Wabash graduate will become the next head baseball coach for the Little Giants. President Gregory Hess announced today that veteran coach Jake Martin '03 will join the College's Athletics Department as head baseball coach.

    Wooster first baseman Jamie Lackner (Westlake, OH/Westlake), who just wrapped up his junior season with the Scots, was recognized on the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America Team for the second season in a row, collecting second-team honors, the ABCA announced at a banquet Thursday night in conjunction with the finals of the NCAA Div. III Baseball Championships taking place in Appleton, WI.

    Wooster (34-11) came out of the losers bracket to win two games on Saturday against DePauw (25-19) in the 2016 NCAC Baseball Tournament to capture its league-leading 16th conference championship. As league champions, the Fighting Scots have earned the league’s automatic bid into the 2016 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament for the 28th time in school history and the first time since 2013.

    The NCAC baseball regular season will conclude this weekend with cross-over series between teams from the East and West divisions. The winners of the top-four, three-game series will advance to the 2016 NCAC Baseball Tournament, while the series featuring the two fifth-place teams will be played to decide places nine and 10 in the final NCAC standings. The cross-over series matchups will be announced on Tuesday evening following the completion of all regular season divisional games. The 2016 NCAC Baseball Tournament is then scheduled for the following weekend, May 12-14, at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

    With just two weeks left in the NCAC Baseball season, we are starting to see some separation in the standings, as Denison (8-2, 20-8) holds a two-game lead over Ohio Wesleyan (7-5, 20-10) in the West and Wooster (8-2, 20-8) has built a two-game advantage over Allegheny (8-4, 16-12) in the East. League teams continue mid-week non-conference play this week, before returning to the divisional slate this weekend, led by Kenyon (6-4, 20-11) hosting Allegheny in the East and Denison traveling to Wabash (6-6, 16-16) in the West.

League teams return to the diamond this week for 12 non-conference midweek games, before divisional play picks back up this weekend, highlighted by Allegheny (4-4, 11-12) hosting Oberlin (4-2, 12-13) in the East and Wabash (6-2, 16-10) traveling to DePauw (4-8, 13-15) in the West.

    An early spring snow storm halted play across the region last weekend as only four of the NCAC’s 16 regularly scheduled divisional games were contested, highlighted by Denison (2-0, 13-5) picking up its first two wins of the season in West Division play on Sunday with a DH sweep over DePauw (2-4, 11-11). Several of the postponed conference games will be made up on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the original league schedule picks back up this weekend with four series on the slate, led by Kenyon (4-0, 16-5) hosting Oberlin (0-0, 8-11) in the East and DePauw traveling to Ohio Wesleyan (2-2, 14-6) in the West.
