For the first time this year, both of the NCAC Baseball Player of the Week selections were named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, with DePauw senior Mike Hammel (Westfield, IN/Cathedral) occupying the first base position and Allegheny freshman Jarod Deagan (Copley, OH/Copley) being named as one of the four starting pitchers.
Deagan earned the honor after turning in a pair of dazzling performances on the mound last week. In two starts spanning 17.0 innings, Deagan allowed just one run on 11 hits with 12 strikeouts, good for an 0.53 ERA and .183 batting average against. In Monday's win over Kenyon, Deagan earned his first-career complete game victory, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts as the Gators topped the Lords 9-1. Six days later against No. 7 Wooster, he was even more impressive, as he threw eight shutout innings and scattered four hits with five strikeouts. In a span between the fourth and sixth innings, Deagan retired 14 straight batters, and faced just four batters over the minimum over his eight innings of work.
Limited to pitching duties and no plate appearances in the first game of DePauw's NCAC West series against Wittenberg, Hammel finished the series by hitting an astounding .692 (9-for-13) with four home runs and 10 RBI. He recorded seven extra base hits, including two doubles and one triple for a 1.923 slugging percentage. In the first game on Sunday, Hammel hit two home runs, including a sacrifice fly in the ninth that ended up being the game-winner in DPU's 8-7 victory. He capped off his weekend by hitting a grand slam in the 16-4 win over Wittenberg in game four on Sunday.
