The North Coast entertains a full slate of conference matches this week with all eight teams playing at least one conference contest. League action gets started on Tuesday as Wooster (1-1, 0-0) travels to Ohio Wesleyan (1-2, 0-1) in the Fighting Scots’ conference opener. Wednesday will see Kenyon (0-0, 2-2) go on the road to face Earlham (2-0, 0-0) as each team seeks its first conference win of the year.
DENISON has started the
2013 season with three consecutive overtime victories. The Big
Red’s 4-3 win over Johnson Hopkins on Saturday came in a
shootout. That marked the first shootout/stroke-off win by a
Denison team since the 2003 season. Alex B. Berman
(Winnetka, IL/New Trier) scored three of the
team’s seven goals and provided game-winners versus
Ohio Weslyean and Johns Hopkins.
11th-ranked DEPAUW battled 6th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday at Christopher Newport University. The Eagles scored a pair of second-half goals to send the Tigers to a 3-1 defeat. Maggie Campbell (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) tallied DePauw’s only goal in the contest. Maggie Steele (Loveland, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) had four saves for the Tigers. On Sunday the Tigers were blanked by 9th-ranked Christopher Newport, 3-0. Steele made five saves in a losing effort for DePauw.
EARLHAM opened up its 2013 campaign with a perfect 2-0 start after wins over Wells and Wilson. Freshman Natasha Jacobs (Aurora, CO/Cherokee Trail) led the way with two goals on six shots.
KENYON’S offense thrived this weekend in Frostburg, Maryland. On their way to winning the two-day Frostburg State Tournament, the Ladies defeated the host Bobcats, 6-1, Saturday and then took Sunday’s title tilt with a 5-1 victory over Randolph-Macon. Junior forward Rachel Hall (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) was the spark that ignited the Ladies on an 11-goal barrage over two weekend games. Hall uncorked 23 shots over those two games and found the opponents’ cage five times.
OBERLIN went 1-1 on its trip to the Boston area, falling to Bentley University, 4-0, before regrouping to down Wheelock College by an 8-0 count. First-year Ariana Enzerink (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) posted a hat trick in the win over Wheelock, while classmate Oliva DeToma (Medway, MA/Medway) also added a pair of goals in the win.
OHIO WESLEYAN dropped its North Coast opener last week at home to Denison, 2-1, in overtime. However the Bishops responded by topping Houghton, 2-1, on Saturday. Freshman midfielder Haley Savoie (San Diego, CA/Del Norte) scored a goal in the OT loss and then setup the game winning-goal in the Bishops win.
WITTENBERG picked up its first victory of the 2013 campaign with a convincing 5-0 win over Bethany (WV) on the road on Saturday, but split the week with a 4-0 loss at Washington & Jefferson the next day. In the win, sophomore Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) scored twice on assists from junior Kim Loofbourrow (Prospect, KY/Ballard).
WOOSTER was idle last week. The Scots return to action Tuesday (9/10) on the road versus conference foe, Ohio Wesleyan.
