20th-ranked Kenyon (19-3) saw its historic 2014 season come to a close last Wednesday afternoon following a 2-0 loss against 19th-ranked Messiah (15-6) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament.

Messiah scored a goal in each half and outshot the Ladies by an 18-8 margin en route to earning the two-goal victory. Taylor Holt fired in a shot off a rebound in the first half, while Carissa Gehman took a pass from Holt and sent it into the back of the net late in the second half to secure the win for the Eagles. Kenyon junior Maddie Breschi (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle), the 2014 NCAC Defensive Player of the Year selection, was one of three Ladies to tally two shots in the loss, while freshman netminder Sarah Speroff (Euclid, OH/Hawken) finished the game with six saves.

For the first time since the 2007 season, the Ladies captured both the NCAC regular season and tournament championships this fall after posting a 13-1 record against league foes during regular season play. KC then reeled off a pair of wins over Wittenberg, 2-0, and Denison, 1-0, in the NCAC Tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.
