Kenyon opened up the 2014 season with a perfect 2-0 record for the first time since 2005, picking up victories over Centre and Sewanee. Three-time defending conference champion, the DePauw Tigers, also go off to a strong start, posting a 2-0 record with wins over Hendrix and Rhodes. Non-conference action continues this weekend with five of the eight teams in action.
DENISON opened the season in Lexington, Virginia with a pair of narrow defeats against nationally ranked opponents, No. 4 Christopher Newport and No. 15 Catholic University. Denison is idle this week and will open NCAC play on Sept. 13 against Earlham.
20th-rankedDEPAUW posted a pair of shutout victories last weekend over SAA opponents Hendrix and Rhodes. The Tigers knocked off Hendrix on Saturday, 7-0, behind two goals each from Grace Fisher (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph’s Academy) and Reilly Bruce (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker). The next day, Paige Henry (Louisville, KY/Kentucky Country Day) slotted home the game-winning goal in double-overtime to knock off Rhodes, 1-0.
EARLHAM dropped both of its contests to open the 2014 season, falling to Transylvania, 5-2, and Centre, 6-0. Sophomore Kaitlyn Brunner (Aurora, CO/Cherokee Trail) scored both goals for the Quakers against Transy.
For the first time since the 2005 season, theKENYON Ladies opened the season with a 2-0 record. Senior Rachel Hall (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) scored the lone goal in Kenyon’s 1-0 season-opening win over Centre, a team that went 16-5 and made an NCAA appearance last season. The next day, Hall recorded an assist in Kenyon’s 3-2 win over Sewanee.
OBERLIN lost its season-opening match to Washington & Jefferson, 7-0. Sophomore goalie Maggie Gossiaux (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) had a career-high 15 saves, while fifth-year senior Hannah Christiansen (Williamstown, MA/Emma Willard) had a defensive save.
OHIO WESLEYAN opened the season with a thrilling 4-3 win over Sewanee. Julia Melio (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) scored the game-winning goal with 5:50 left in regulation. It was her second goal of the game, having given the Bishops a 1-0 lead just 75 seconds into her collegiate career.
WITTENBERG opened the season with a tough 2-1 loss on the road at Washington & Jefferson despite the first collegiate goal from senior Kelly McLean (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook South) and 12 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Brownell (Ocnomowoc, WI/University Lake School). The Tigers quickly rebounded for a 3-0 home-opening win over Bethany (WV) that included another goal from McLean.
WOOSTER went 0-2 during a challenging two-game trip to upstate New York, falling 2-1 to host SUNY Oneonta and 7-3 to Utica. Kayla O’Connor (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded her second career hat trick, scoring all three of Wooster’s goals in the 7-3 setback against Utica.
