GILBERT, Ariz. – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced its 2018 All-America Field Hockey teams on Wednesday, Dec. 5, and three North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) student-athletes were named to the teams. Denison’s Michelle Kabaira (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) and Lucy Pearsall (Cassopolis, Mich./Latin School of Chicago) were named All-Americans as well as Ohio Wesleyan’s Barbara Welling (Zeist, Netherlands/KSG de Breul).
Great Lakes Region Player of the Year, Kabaira was named a member of the All-America second-team. She anchored a Denison defense that posted 11 shutouts in 2018 and logged the seventh-lowest goals-against average in the country at 0.65. The Harare, Zimbabwe native was also named the NCAC's Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season while racking up all-conference first-team honors in back-to-back campaigns.
Joining Kabaira is Pearsall, who lands on the All-America third-team after being an all-region first-team selection this season. She was named the NCAC's Midfielder of the Year in 2018, finishing the season tied for second on the team with seven goals while adding two assists. Totaling 25 assists for her career, Pearsall is tied for second in program history for career assists with Keri Arnold (1997-00).
Welling was also named to the All-America third-team after being an all-region first-team selection in 2018. She was named the NCAC Offensive Player of the Year and the NCAC Newcomer of the Year after ranking fifth in the NCAC with 11 goals this season. Her four assists tied for second on the team, while her 26 points were tied for fifth in the NCAC.
