NCAA Selection Release  |  NCAA Bracket

Denison (18-3) saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division Field Hockey Tournament, after falling 3-1 to Lynchburg (16-5) on Nov. 7. The Hornets will now make a trip Glassboro, N.J., to square off with No. 3 Rowan on Saturday, Nov. 10.

After a 13-game winning streak, the loss marks the Big Red's first setback since Sept. 18 when they dropped a 1-0 decision to Washington & Jefferson.

Denison got on the board first when Charlotte Godfrey (Denver, CO/Cherry Creek) found the back of the cage at the 29:17 mark. The Big Red would take the 1-0 lead into the half along with an 8-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge on penalty corners.

The Denison squad continued its strong presence with a 13-7 shots advantage, while earning six corners to Lynchburg's four in the second half, but the Hornets controlled the remainder of the game with three unanswered goals. Lynchburg's Alexis Brown scored the equalizer off of a corner with the assist coming from Nikki Simpao at the 42:35 mark. Kayla Copeman then found the back of the cage for the go-ahead goal off of Jackie Lerro's stick at 61:29 before Simpao got on the board for the final goal of the game.

Teya Adams (Rochester, N.H./Berwick Academy) recorded four saves for Denison, while Laurel Nicks made 13 saves in the contest for the Hornets.

Denison's 18 wins this year tied for the most wins in a season (2011, 1984), while the Big Red will take a record 26-game NCAC regular-season winning streak into the 2019 season.

GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison (18-2) claimed its third North Coast Athletic Conference tournament title on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Wooster (15-6) in Granville, Ohio.

The Big Red got off to a quick start when AC Veith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) scored her fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Abby Scully (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) just 7:41 into the contest. Denison then found the back of the cage again at the 17:18 mark when Kat Swan (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) setup Charlotte Godfrey (Denver, CO/Cherry Creek) to score her eighth goal of the season. The half ended with the Big Red claiming an 11-0 advantage in shots and 3-0 edge in penalty corners.

Denison continued to apply pressure in the second half looking to extend the lead but Wooster sophomore Katie Shideler (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) denied the Big Red on several chances with great saves. The Big Red tallied seven shots in the second half to The Fighting Scots' one, while earning another four corners in the final 35 minutes and Wooster claimed two.

With the win, Denison extends its unbeaten streak to 13 games and will represent the NCAC in the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament for the 13th time in program history. Denison (18-2) will play at Lynchburg (15-5) in a first-round match on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. The winner will face Rowan on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Glassboro, N.J. Lynchburg won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title for the 19th time with a 7-2 victory over Shenandoah last Saturday.

Denison Field Hockey is 4-14 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with its last appearance coming in 2017.
