CHAMPIONS! Wittenberg Claims NCAA Golf Title

Wittenberg combined to shoot five-under over the final two holes to post a final-round 293 and finish with a four-day total of 1,180 to capture the program’s first-ever NCAA Division III National Title at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. This marks the 67th NCAA team title in NCAC history and the first in men’s golf.

The Tigers were the lone team to break 300 in all four rounds on their way to the national title, including firing the lowest round of the week, 290, on day two. 2017 marks the fourth-straight top-five performance in eight total appearances in national competition under head coach Jeff Roope.

Senior Garrett Brickley (Pickerington, OH/North) led the Tigers after posting birdies on the final two holes to card a fourth-round 68 and force a playoff with Hope’s Josh Gibson. Gibson captured medalist honors after defeating Brickley in the one-hole playoff with a par on the par-4 18th.

Freshman Cameron Willis (Eaton, OH, Eaton) impressed in his first national championship appearance after posting a four-round total of 297 that included an opening round 70 to finish in a tie for 18th. Joining Brickley and Willis in the top-25 was senior Sam Stilwell (Sterling, VA/Dominion) who birdied his final hole of the tournament to post a 73 for a four-day total of 298 a 24th-place finish.

Overall the Tigers ended up placing all five competitors in the top 45 as sophomore Colin Laszlo (Waipahu, HI/Punahou) finished in sole possession of 41st (303) and senior Mark David Wright (Westerville, OH/Tree of Life) tied for 42nd with a four day total of 304.
