Newton Garners Weekly USTFCCCA Honor

Oberlin junior Monique Newton (Sacramento, CA/Rancho Cordova) was named National Field Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced on December 13th.

Newton, who also earned her second straight North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honor, turned in a record-breaking performance at the Kent State Golden Gala over the weekend.
 
On her final attempt in the women's shot put, Newton unleashed a throw of 49'09.25" to break her own school record in the event. Furthermore, the mark is currently tops in the nation, and is the farthest in Division III over the last three seasons in addition to being ninth-best all-time.  
 
Newton, who is the first Oberlin athlete to earn national athlete of the week laurels, headlines an impressive Yeowomen throws unit that also features two other athletes who sit in the top five in the nation in the shot put. Freshman Naeisha McClain (Columbus, GA/Brookstone) is fourth in the country with a mark of 43'11.25", while junior Ana Richardson (Eugene, OR/South Eugene) is one spot back at 42'09.25".
