The 2016-17 North Coast indoor track & field season kicked off last weekend with numerous league schools competing at season-opening non-scoring events. There will be three NCAC squads in action this week while the rest of the conference will be idle until after the holiday break.
DENISON, KENYON and WITTENBERG traveled to Alliance, Ohio, last week for the non-scoring Mount Union Troy Drive Invite. Denison junior Church Humphreys (Dallas, TX/Woodberry Forest School (Va.)) paced the Big Red with a pair of top-seven performances. He finished fourth in the high jump with a combined leap of 38’1.25 and finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 19’9”. Sophomore Isaac Reed (Upland, CA/Oak Hills) turned in a personal-record time in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.91 en route to an eight-place finish. On the women’s side, senior Anne Lee (Millstone, NJ/Allentwon) picked up a win in the triple jump with a combined leap of 33’3.25”. Junior Hannah Hall (New Richmond, OH/New Richmond) was also victorious in the high jump after clearing 5’1.75”. Arlesha Cospy (Trotwood, OH/Trotwood-Madison) had good afternoon as she posted two top-3 finishes. She finished third in the shot put with a throw of 39’9.75” and second in the weight throw with a toss of 48’3.25” The Lords participated in just a few events along the throws and jumps with Jordan Potter (Minneapolis, MN/The Blake School) having the best finish for Kenyon as he placed 10th in the weight throw event. Senior Mary Lauletta (Hudson, OH/Hudson) and freshman Caitlyn Haas (Mansfield, OH/Lexington) tied for the best overall individual finish for the Ladies. Lauletta placed seventh in the long jump with a best leap of 4.68 meters, while Hass had the same placement in the high jump, clearing 1.32 meters. Wittenberg senior Cody Shutt (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) and freshman Drew Campbell (Eaton, OH/Eaton) led the way on the men’s side for the Tigers. Shutt turned in a second-place finish in the 400-meters by crossing the line in 51.06, while Campbell finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.86 meters. In her first collegiate event, freshman Gabrielle Draginoff (Cincinnati, OH/McAvley) shattered the school’s pole vault record at 10’ 9”, good enough for second-place at the invite. In the women’s 800-meters, the Tigers controlled the podium as senior Frankie Bowsher (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) finished first at 2:38.27, Kelsey Fobean (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) in second at 2:38.97 and Staci Harmon (New Carlisle, OH/Tecumseh) third at 2:45.40.
OBERLIN and OHIO WESLEYAN opened the 2016-17 season on Saturday at the non-scoring Case Spartan Holiday Classic. For the Yeomen, James Tanford (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South) and Hank Sinn (Latty, OH/Wayne Trace) led the way with a pair of victories in the field. Tanford got his year rolling with a win in the triple jump by posting a personal best leap of 12.55 meters. Sinn led the Yeomen in both throwing events and claimed first in the weight throw with a toss of 14.62 meters. For the Yeowoman, sophomore Imani Cook-Gist (Santa Monica, CA/Harvard Westlake) and junior Monique Newton (Sacramento, CA/Rancho Cordova) led the way for Oberlin. Cook-Gist returned in good form, winning the 60-meter dash in a new program-best, 7.89, in the finals to take the top spot. Newton turned in a pair of top two performances in both throwing events, winning the shot put with a toss of 13.67 meters and finishing second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.45. Sophomore Delontaye Morrow (Medina, OH/Medina) won three events to lead Ohio Wesleyan. Morrow won the 60- and 200-meter dashes in respective times of 7.10 and 23.23, and also took the long jump with a leap of 6.45 meters. Junior Emily Brown (New Concord, OH/John Glenn) and freshman Cirrus Robinson (Ashland, OH/Ashlan) each won an event for the Bishops on the women’s side. Brown won the 200-meter dash in 22.37, while Robinson won the high jump by clearing 1.65 meters.
WABASH opened the 2016-17 season by sending a small group of competitors to the University of Indianapolis non-scoring meet Saturday. Hayden Baehl (Haubstadt, IN/Gibson Southern) turned in the top individual finish by winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.23. Cole Seward (Terre Haute, IN/North Vigo) placed second in the 600-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:25.32. Austin Ellingwood (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) captured third place in the finals of the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.30.
