TITLE; LOVE, DENNING EARN TOP INDIVIDUAL HONORS

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Wittenberg won six events and posted 13 top-three
finishes on the way to its second consecutive team title at the 1997 North
Coast Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships, which
were held Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at Denison's Mitchell Recreation and Athletics
Center.

Wittenberg totaled 149 points to 99 for second-place Wooster, which
improved six positions and 60 points from last season to earn Coach of the
Year honors for Dennis Rice. The Scots won three events and had six
top-three finishes. Ohio Wesleyan won two events and placed third with 84
points, followed by Allegheny (77.5) in fourth, Denison (49) in fifth and
Kenyon (47.5), Oberlin (42), CWRU (36) and Earlham (34) in spots six
through nine, respectively.

Wittenberg was led by junior Jason Love (Columbus, OH/St. Charles), who
repeated as Most Outstanding Field Performer and added the title of Most
Outstanding Sprinter after winning three individual events. Love defended
his title in the long jump (22' 10") in addition to wins in the 55 (6.59)
and 300 (35.33), breaking an NCAC record in the latter. He also placed
second in the triple jump and anchored the first-place 4x200 relay
(1:33.48). The Tigers' other wins came from junior Bart Lubbers
(Columbus, OH/Worthington) in the triple jump (44' 5-1/2") and senior
Scott Rickel (Port Clinton, OH/Port Clinton) in the 400 (50.29).

Wooster's top performances came from junior Tony Kauke (Oakland,
CA/Alhambra), who set a North Coast record in winning the 800 (1:57.5),
and freshman Tim Sir Louis (Medina, OH/Highland), who won the pole vault
(13' 6"). The Scots also won the distance medley relay (10:40.47).
Kenyon junior Dan Denning (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) won the
3000 (8:55.3) and 5000 (15:18.3) to earn Most Outstanding Distance Runner
honors.

The event's remaining individual wins went to Allegheny juniors Jim
Mormino (Mayfield Heights, OH/Mayfield) in the shot put (47' 6-1/4") and
Chris Haberer (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) in the high jump (6' 5"), Denison
sophomore Eric Nigh (Cheyenne, WY/Central) in the 1500 (4:02.64) and Ohio
Wesleyan sophomore David Spring (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) in the 55
hurdles (8.00).
