There was limited action on the North Coast men’s basketball circuit last week as only three games were played, led by nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (3-1, 9-1) topping Kenyon (1-3, 3-5) in conference play on Saturday afternoon. Several league teams will be competing in tournaments over the Holiday Break, highlighted by Wittenberg (3-1, 6-2) hosting its annual Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic, Wooster (2-1, 5-2) hosting its annual “Mose” Hole/Kiwanis Classic and DePauw (1-2, 3-5) hosting its annual Tampa Bay Shootout at Tampa Prep High School in Tampa, Florida. The league portion of the 2015-16 schedule picks back up on Sunday, January 3rd with three games on the slate, led by Wooster hosting Denison (2-2, 5-4) at 4:00 p.m.

HIRAM picked up an 88-81 non-conference win at La Roche on Saturday behind career-day performances from a handful of players. Sophomore Kelvin Jones (Sheffield Lake, OH/Brookside) scored a career-high 23 points and added 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. In addition, senior Austen Rekolt (Salem, OH/West Branch) added a career-high 17 points and classmate Ray Gaston (Warren, OH/John F. Kennedy) tied his career-best with 19 points.

KENYON dropped a 96-62 decision against No. 9 Ohio Wesleyan in its only action last week. The Lords, who held a 44-40 edge on the glass, were led by senior center Brien Comey (Westport, CT/Green Farms Academy) with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field.

OHIO WESLEYAN, ranked ninth in the most recent Top-25, hit 10 of its first 12 shots from beyond the arc and built a 55-22 lead at half en route to posting a convincing 92-62 triumph over Kenyon on Saturday. Senior post Matt Jeske (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) shot a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first stanza and finished the contest with 14 points, while senior post Claude Gray (Avon, OH/Avon) was the Bishops’ leading scorer with 17 points after shooting 6-of-11 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. In addition, junior post Ben Simpson (Lake Bluff, IL/Lake Forest) finished two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

WOOSTER, which appears in the “Others Receiving Votes” portion of the most recent Top-25, opened play on Sunday at the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a 49-35 victory over St. Mary’s (MD). Junior Dan Fanelly (Uniontown, OH/Green) led all scorers in the game with 24 points.
