Hiram junior center Kelvin Jones helped the Terriers split their final two games of the regular season to earn the fifth seed in the 2017 NCAC Tournament. Jones, who logged 14 double-double performances on the year, opened the week with 14 points and 12 rebounds in an 80-66 loss against Denison. However, he put the Terriers on his back in the regular season finale with 18 points and 17 rebounds in a 58-55 win over Kenyon. In the two games combined, Jones scored 32 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, to go along with tallying 29 rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists.

February 13th

Oberlin sophomore forward Andre Campbell had a near perfect shooting performance during a week that saw the Yeomen pick up their first league win of the season over Kenyon by an 80-60 margin on Wednesday. Campbell shot 8-of-9 from the field against the Lords to finish with a game-high 17 points. He then had a career day in a 65-59 loss at Wabash with 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. In the two games combined, Campbell shot 82 percent (18-of-22) from the field and also collected eight total rebounds.

Ohio Wesleyan senior post Ben Simpson notched a pair of double-double performances in leading the Bishops in a pair of wins over No. 12 Denison, 82-77, and Kenyon, 92-71. He opened the week with 24 points and 11 rebounds against the Big Red, which included a stretch of seven-straight points late in the second half that put the Bishops ahead to stay. He then capped off the week with a 17-point, 11-rebound effort in the 21-point win over the Lords. In the two games combined, he shot 59 percent (17-of-29) from the field, to go along with tallying five assists, three blocks and three steals.

Wittenberg senior wing Jaelin Williams scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half to propel the Tigers to a 71-70 upset victory over No. 9 Denison on Saturday. Williams drilled back-to-back jumpers in the final two minutes of the game to keep the Tigers within striking distance, before sealing the win over DU by pinning a last-second shot against the backboard for his second block of the game. Williams, who also scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds in a 59-48 midweek win over DePauw, shot 55 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and 88 percent from the free throw line in the two games combined.

Denison senior guard David Meurer helped the 10th-ranked Big Red secure their best start in school history at 16-1 overall by scoring 48 total points in a pair of wins last week over Hiram, 83-77, and Kenyon, 82-67. Meurer paced the Big Red’s starting five in both contests, scoring 17 in the win over the Terriers and a season-high 31 against rival Kenyon. In 56 total minutes of action on the week, he shot 58 percent (19-of-33) from the field and 42 percent (5-of-12) from three-point range, to go along with totaling eight assists, five rebounds and five steals.

Ohio Wesleyan junior point guard Nate Axelrod opened the week with a career-high 39 points in the Bishops’ 84-78 win over Hiram, before scoring 12 more points and handing out eight assists in a 107-83 victory over Allegheny on Saturday. In the two games combined, Axelrod shot 67 percent (18-of-27) from the field and 46 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range, to go along with pulling down six rebounds (3.0 rpg) and handing out nine total assists (4.5 apg).

DePauw senior guard Luke Lattner helped the Tigers extend their winning streak to five-straight last week with a pair of strong performances in wins over Allegheny, 100-91, and Kenyon, 73-64. In the win over the Gators, Lattner tallied 36 points, seven assists and six rebounds, before dropping 20 points and pulling down six more boards against the Lords. In the two games combined, he shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field and 87 percent (20-of-23) from the free throw line.

Wittenberg senior wing Jaelin Williams helped spark a four-game winning streak over the holiday break that culminated with the Tigers winning their second-straight Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic. Williams was named the tournament MVP after finishing the two-game stretch with 32 points on 12-of-27 shooting from the field and 4-of-10 shooting from three-point range. He also tossed in 17 points in Wittenberg’s 76-53 league win over Kenyon on December 19th and added a season-high 10 rebounds in a 77-72 win over Heidelberg on December 22nd.

Wabash sophomore post Logan White logged his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the Little Giants’ 58-52 home win over Hiram on Saturday night. White, who played all but two minutes in the game, scored four of Wabash’s six second-half field goals and also pulled down nine boards in the second half to help the squad maintain its lead through the final 20 minutes of action. White, who also finished the game with two assists and one block, shot 53 percent from the field after knocking down 8-of-15 shot attempts.

Hiram junior guard Paul Ortiz led the Terriers to a pair of league wins last week against No. 17 Wooster, 72-68, and Allegheny, 90-78. Ortiz dropped a season-high 27 points against Wooster on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, before adding a game-high 24 points against the Gators after connecting on 6-of-9 three-point attempts. In the two games combined, Ortiz scored 51 points after shooting 58 percent (18-of-31) from the field and 67 percent (10-of-15) from beyond the arc, while also averaging 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game.

Denison senior post Jett Speelman claimed the league’s weekly honor for the second week in a row after leading the Big Red to back-to-back conference wins last week against No. 11 Wooster, 65-59, and Kenyon, 67-58. In Wednesday’s six-point upset win at nationally-ranked Wooster, Speelman notched his first double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds, before adding another 12 points and five rebounds in the win over local-rival Kenyon on Saturday. In the two games combined, he shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Denison senior post Jett Speelman led the Big Red in scoring in a pair of key regional wins last week over Case, 85-75, and Otterbein, 66-59. He scored a season-high 23 points in the win over Case after shooting 8-of-11 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range, before adding a 19-point performance in DU’s seven-point victory over local-rival Otterbein on Sunday. In addition to his scoring, Speelman also added seven rebounds and two assists against the Spartans and four more rebounds against the Cardinals.

Ohio Wesleyan junior wing Will Orr topped his career-high scoring mark twice last week in wins over Albion, 91-77, and Trine, 79-72, at the St. Andrews Products Classic in Angola, Indiana. He initially set his career-high with 20 points in Friday’s win over Albion, before topping that mark with a 21-point effort against Trine on Saturday. In the two wins combined, he shot a blistering 13-of-23 (.565) from beyond the arc, which included a 6-for-10 effort against Albion and a 7-for-13 performance against Trine. He also added seven rebounds (3.5 rpg) and four steals (2.0 spg) over the two early season wins.
