Denison (2-0, 9-0), Ohio Wesleyan (2-0, 7-2) and Kenyon (2-0, 7-3) all remained perfect in NCAC play last weekend with wins over DePauw (1-1, 3-6), Hiram (0-2, 2-5) and Oberlin (0-2, 5-4), respectively. North Coast Men's Lacrosse action continues this week with four conference tilts scheduled, highlighted by Ohio Wesleyan hosting Kenyon on Saturday.
No. 5 DENISON continued its winnings ways with a pair of conference victories to open the 2014 NCAC Schedule. The Big Red knocked off Wooster, 9-3, and ended the week with a 21-0 shutout victory at DePauw. Freshman Luke Walsh (Buffalo, NY/Nichols School/Deerfield Academy) paced the Big Red offense with six goals and a pair of assists, including a career-high five goals against the Fighting Scots. Senior Eddie Vita (Coronado, CA/Coronado) was one of three DU players to score three goals last week. Vita also dished out three assists and scooped up four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) went 2-0 last week after surrendering just three goals and making 13 saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
DEPAUW traveled to California for its Spring Break trip and dropped contests to Whittier and Division II Dominican (Calif.), before returning home and falling to Denison, 21-0. Robert Lapp (Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy) scored two of the Tigers' goals on the week.
HIRAM had a busy week after playing three games, picking up one win over Houghton, 11-7, on Thursday. The Terriers dropped to 0-2 in league play after falling to Ohio Wesleyan, 25-1. Douglas Legris (Fairfax, VT/Bellows Free Academy) led the Terriers on the week by registering five goals on 19 shots, to go along with six ground balls, one assist and one forced turnover.
KENYON won two more one-goal games, running its overall streak to three. Wednesday, senior Zach Arlia (Plymouth, MA/Loomis Chaffee) scored a goal in overtime to lift the Lords to a 10-9 non-conference triumph over the visiting Otterbein Cardinals. Saturday, the Lords traveled to Oberlin and pulled out a 6-5 snow-swept thriller. Against the Yeomen it was freshman Alex Lopez (Portola Valley, CA/Woodside) who netted the game-winner with 3:01 left in the contest.
Nick Lobley (Port Washington, NY/Portledge School) scored with 10 seconds left to lift OBERLIN to a 9-8 victory over Drew on Tuesday. The Yeomen then fought through heavy winds and large snowfall in a tough 6-5 loss to Kenyon. Lobley had two goals and an assist in each game and now leads the team with 17 scores on the year.
Senior attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, MA/Bridgton Academy) collected two goals and five assists as OHIO WESLEYAN raced to a 12-0 lead and went on to record an NCAC win over Hiram. Helms finished with two goals and five assists, while freshman attacker Mario Vezza (Glen Head, NY/Chaminade) had five goals and two assists. Junior Ryan McMahon (Springfield, VA/The Bullis School) blanked the Terriers during the first quarter, freshman Ben Rigger (Decatur, GA/Decatur) made four saves during the second and third quarters and freshman Akil Goodridge (Lithonia, GA/Arabia Mountain) made one save during the fourth quarter.
WITTENBERG grabbed a 7-5 victory from rival Wooster on Saturday to move to 1-1 in conference action. The Tigers rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and later came back from behind 5-4, scoring the game's last three goals. Junior Sean Kelleher (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) scored the go-ahead goal, while senior Jordan Shoger (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) led the lineup with three scores.
WOOSTER senior goalkeeper Matt Magoon (Plymouth, MA/Dexter School) was a bright spot for the Scots last week, as he saved 60 percent or more of the shots he faced in the losses to No. 5 ranked Denison (11 saves, 9 goals allowed) and Wittenberg (15 saves, 7 goals allowed). Overall, he compiled a .619 save percentage.
