Allegheny Claims Third NCAC Softball Tournament Championship

Fourth-seeded Allegheny topped second-seeded Wittenberg, 3-2, in the deciding seventh game of the 2013 NCAC softball tournament on Saturday, May 4, in Greencastle, In. The Gators, who also won tourney crowns in 2004 and 2007, earn the NCAC's automatic berth into next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.  

Allegheny opened tourney play with an 8-0 (5) win over DePauw, while Wittenberg opened with a 4-1 win over Kenyon. The Gators then topped the Tigers fro Springfield, 8-1, in their first meeting of the weekend. DePauw eliminated Kenyon with a 6-1 win to cap the first day of tourney play.

Wittenberg began its second day of postseason with a 6-5 victory over the host Tigers to advance to the championship and another shot at the Gators. Wittenberg won, 7-4, to force the seventh game. 

Since the inception of the NCAC Softball Tournament in the 2001 season, Denison has claimed six tournament titles (2001-02, '06, '08, '10, '12). Allegheny is second with three tourney titles (2004, '07, '13), Hiram has won two titles (2009, '11), Ohio Wesleyan claimed the 2005 crown and Wittenberg secured the tournament title in the 2003 season.
