Allegheny (24-20) saw its magical run at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Angola Regional come to a close on Monday afternoon, falling to Anderson, 5-1, in the second game of the championship round at Trine University in Angola, Indiana.
The Gators opened the double-elimination tournament with three straight wins, including wins over tournament No. 3 seed and Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament Champion John Carroll, along with OAC member and No. 2 seed Capital. Allegheny notched its third straight NCAA Regional win by defeating Aurora, 10-1, emerging out of the winners bracket in the championship round.
Anderson forced the "if-necessary" championship game on Monday morning after a 16-4 result over the Gators Sunday afternoon, which saw the Ravens score in every inning.
Four Gators were named to the NCAA Angola Regional All-Tournament team, as senior Nicole Rodi (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South), junior Halea Hayden (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) along with sophomores Caitlin Nealer (New Kensington, PA/Valley) and Sadie Stuart (Jamestown, NY/Falconer Central) earned the honor.
Stuart led the Gators with a .500 batting average during the five-game regional, tallying a team-high nine hits, adding four RBI and a home run, her 11th of the season that set a new single-season program record. Hayden and Rodi tied for the team high with five RBI, as Hayden batted .462 and Rodi scattered seven hits for a .438 batting average.
Nealer finished the tournament with a 2.46 ERA, pitching four complete games and earning all three Allegheny wins, while striking out 22 total batters. Nealer carried two no-hitters into the fifth inning during the regional.
