  • Hiram Welcomes Mangola & O'Neill To Coaching Staff

    Hiram College has welcomed two new members to its coaching staff for the 2014-15 academic year. Jacqueline Mangola will take over as the 13th softball coach in program history, while Brian O'Neill becomes just the fourth swimming & diving coach in school history.
  • Five NCAC Players Named To NFCA All-Central Region

    Led by first-team selection Rebecca Dyer (Shelby Township, MI/Detroit Country Day) of Denison, the NCAC had five student-athletes selected to the 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region Softball Team.

    DePauw (27-20) dropped a tough 2-1 contest against third-seeded Muskingum in the opening round of the Trine Regional in Indiana. The Tigers opened up a 1-0 lead after Linsey Button (Ballwin, MO/Lafayette) scored in the bottom of the first, but Muskingum scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning for the 2-1 victory as DePauw was only able to collect four hits the rest of the game. The loss forced DPU into the loser’s bracket.

    DePauw jumped out to an early lead, but Muskingum posted single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and advanced in the NCAA Division III Regional winner's bracket with a 2-1 win over the Tigers.

    Denison junior Julie Rooney (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) was named Player of the Year and Big Red senior pitcher Rebecca Dyer (Shelby Township, MI/Detroit Country Day) earned Pitcher of the Year honors to highlight the 2014 All-North Coast Athletic Conference softball selections.

    DePauw (13-3, 26-18) captured its first North Coast Athletic Conference softball tournament championship after defeating Wittenberg (11-5, 24-11), 5-4, in game 7 of the 2014 NCAC Softball Tournament on Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana. Game 7 was needed after Wittenberg earned a 8-7 victory over DPU in game 6. In game 7, Megan Landahl’s (Brookfield, IL/Riverside-Brookfield) walkoff single down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh scored Taylor Golden (Chicago, IL/Trinity) from third to give DePauw the win, as Kahla Nolan (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton North) collected her third win of the weekend.

    The seeds for the 2014 NCAC Softball Tournament are set. The Tournament will be held at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, May 2-3.

    Two North Coast Athletic softball players were named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 1st.

With all four tournament spots still up in the air, North Coast action continues this week with four doubleheaders scheduled for Wednesday, four on Saturday and the league schedule concluding on Sunday as Kenyon (4-8, 19-13) takes on Denison (6-4, 14-12) in Granville.

    Hiram (4-4, 9-13) highlighted a busy week of North Coast action as the Terriers picked up sweeps over Wooster (2-6, 10-19) and Kenyon (2-8, 17-13). The Terriers are now one of five teams within two losses in the loss column of the top-spot in the league standings going into the final two weeks of regular season play. Conference tilts continue this week with three doubleheaders scheduled on Tuesday, one on Thursday and Friday and three more Saturday.

    The North Coast softball schedule continued last week with DePauw (6-0, 15-11) sweeping Denison (3-3, 9-7) and Hiram (0-4, 5-13) to remain undefeated in conference play along with Wittenberg (2-0, 12-2) to sit atop the league standings. Conference play continues this week with one doubleheader scheduled Tuesday, four Wednesday, four Saturday and one on Sunday.

    Weather played havoc on what was supposed to be the first weekend of NCAC play. Only two league games were contested all weekend as DePauw (2-0, 11-9) swept Kenyon (0-2, 14-6) in Greencastle on Sunday afternoon. There are three makeup doubleheaders scheduled this week with Wooster (0-0, 8-9) hosting Oberlin (0-0, 3-7) today (3/31) and Hiram (0-0, 5-9) at Denison (0-0, 6-4) and Ohio Wesleyan (0-0, 9-5) traveling to Allegheny (0-0, 4-11) on Sunday. Highlights include, Kenyon (14-4) traveling to DePauw (7-7) and Denison (6-4) hosting Hiram (5-7). Additionally, Oberlin (2-4) and Ohio Wesleyan (7-5) will hit the road to square off against Wooster (7-9) and Allegheny (3-10), respectively.
