  • Wooster Names Rumph Head Softball Coach

    Victoria Rumph, an international caliber catcher, and currently an alternate for Softball Canada's Women's National Team, will be the next head softball coach at The College of Wooster, announced the College's director of athletics, Keith Beckett, on Thursday. Rumph's official start date is June 13.

    Following a season in which she led DePauw with 10 homers and 43 RBI, DePauw sophomore Lauren Godden (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) has been selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-America Second Team.

    The 2016 North Coast Softball season came to an end last weekend as both DePauw and Wittenberg we eliminated from their respective NCAA regionals. The year marked the first time in conference history the league sent multiple teams into the national tournament.

    Wittenberg (32-7-1) captured its second North Coast Athletic Conference softball tournament championship after defeating DePauw (29-16), 12-3, in game seven of the 2016 NCAC Softball Tournament on Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana.

    Heading into the final week of the regular season, DePauw (12-0, 22-13) holds a three game lead over Denison (9-3, 20-12) and Wittenberg (7-3, 25-6-1) for the top spot in league standings. With all four tournament spots still up in the air, North Coast action continues this week with four doubleheaders scheduled for Tuesday, two on Friday and the league schedule concluding on Saturday with three final doubleheaders.

    Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, DePauw (17-12, 8-0) holds a one game lead over Wittenberg (23-4-1, 7-1) which is off to its best start in school history. The Greencastle Tigers and Springfield Tigers are scheduled for a doubleheader on Wednesday in Indiana.

    North Coast softball squads continued to battle weather as a spring snowstorm hit and only two conference doubleheaders were contested last week. Five teams where unable to see any live game action during the week. There are 12 NCAC doubleheaders scheduled this week, with three on Tuesday, one on Wednesday, two Thursday, four on Saturday and two Sunday.

    Weather played a factor on what was supposed to be the first weekend of NCAC play. Only six league games were contested all weekend as DePauw (2-0, 8-11) and Kenyon (2-0, 13-8-1) swept Hiram (0-2, 5-17) and Oberlin (0-2, 1-21), respectively, while Wittenberg (1-1, 17-4-1) and Ohio Wesleyan (1-1, 6-12) split a doubleheader. There are seven NCAC doubleheaders scheduled this week with one on Tuesday and three each on Wednesday and Saturday.

    North Coast softball squads wrapped up spring break trips last week, as eight teams open up the conference portion of their schedules this Saturday. Highlights include Hiram (4-8) traveling to DePauw (6-11) and Kenyon (10-8) hosting Oberlin (1-16). Additionally, Denison (7-7) and Wittenberg (16-3-1) will hit the road to square off against Allegheny (4-8) and Ohio Wesleyan (5-11), respectively.

    The 2016 North Coast softball season finally got underway last week with numerous teams traveling south for spring break trips. The southern swing continues in the week ahead with Ohio Wesleyan, Wittenberg, Hiram and Kenyon all set to compete in the sunshine state. Denison will open its season out west in Arizona on Sunday.

    Jeff Bricker, an administrator and coach at various NCAA Div. III schools for almost 30 years, will serve as The College of Wooster's head softball coach for the 2016 campaign, it was announced by Keith Beckett, Wooster's director of athletics, physical education, and recreation.
