North Coast softball squads continued spring break trips last week, highlighted by Wittenberg getting off to its best start in program history with a perfect 10-0 mark. Non-conference action continues this week with all nine teams taking to the diamond.
ALLEGHENY will open the 2016 season on Friday, March 18th against Heidelberg on its spring break trip to Clermont, Florida.
DENISON opened the season with a pair of losses to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 4-0, and 11-7, on its spring break trip to Arizona. Sophomore Sarah Herold (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) went 4-for-8 (.500) with a run scored, while freshman Amanda Howell (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) drove in three runs on two hits.
DEPAUW split a non-conference doubleheader at Franklin last week. After collecting just six hits in the first game, DePauw banged out 12 in the second for the win. Haleigh Chasteen (Avon, IN/Avon) was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with two hits in each game. Emma Baldwin (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park Rover Forest) picked up her first win in the circle in the nightcap.
HIRAM fell in all 10 games on its spring trip, falling by one run in four games. Senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, OH/Ellet) posted a team-best .382 batting average on the trip, collecting a hit in eight games and reaching base in all 10. She also scored a team-high eight runs on the trip.
KENYON posted a 7-3 record last week on its spring break trip to Florida. The Ladies fared pretty well in the Sunshine State, earning wins over Nazareth, Rockford, Bridgewater State, Marian, Drew, Edgewood and Salem State. Lindsey Susolik (Newport Beach,CA/Corona Del Mar) led the Ladies at the plate on the week by batting .471 with 16 hits, 12 RBI, five runs scored and eight extra base hits, including two home runs.
OBERLIN snuck in two non-conference games at Ursuline before heading south for their annual spring break trip to Clermont, Florida. The Arrows took game one, 6-2, but not for a lack of trying by Tori Poplaski (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) who knocked a two-run homer in the top of the seventh; her first of the year. Ursuline knocked in six runs in their first at-bat to put the Yeowomen behind early in game two and the Oberlin bats couldn’t get hot. Oberlin fell for the sixth consecutive time this year, 8-1, in five innings.
OHIO WESLEYAN posted a 3-7 record on its 10-game spring break trip last week. Senior Lilly Gresh (Westerville, OH/North) led the Bishops at the plate over the week, batting .370 with 10 hits, nine RBI and four runs scored.
WITTENBERG opened the 2016 season with a school record 10-game winning streak. Freshman Katy Baumgartner (Fishers, IN/Cathedral) led Tiger offense with a .538 batting average and a .571 on-base percentage. She has been a catalyst for an attack that is averaging eight runs per game and a .367 team average. Sophomore Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) was dominant in her five pitching appearances during the week, winning all five starts while compiling a 1.20 ERA.
WOOSTER will open the 2016 season on Monday, March 14th, on its spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida against New England College at 3:00 p.m.
