The 2016 North Coast softball season finally got underway last week with numerous teams traveling south for spring break trips. The southern swing continues in the week ahead with Ohio Wesleyan, Wittenberg, Hiram and Kenyon all set to compete in the sunshine state. Denison will open its season out west in Arizona on Sunday. 

ALLEGHENY will open the 2016 season on Friday, March 18th against Heidelberg on its spring break trip to Clermont, Florida.

DENISON will open the 2016 season on Sunday, March 13th, on its spring break trip in Tucson, Arizona, against Wis.-La Crosse at 2:00 p.m.

DEPAUW opened with a southern swing through Alabama and Georgia and posted a 1-6 record. Of the four schools the Tigers faced, Emory is tied for fourth in the rankings and Berry is 12th. Gabby Smart (Chicago, IL/Trinity) hit safely in four of the five games she played with two multi-hit games.

HIRAM fell in its first two contests of the 2016 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Hiram dropped its first game, 5-2, to Carroll. Senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, OH/Ellet) led the Terriers by going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Hiram then scored four times in the seventh but fell to Illinois College, 6-5. Junior’s Dana Perrotta (New Castle, PA/New Castle), Brittany Zajac (Corry, PA/Corry) and Wahl all had two hits in the loss.

KENYON opened the season with a pair of losses at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Ladies’ pitching struggled allowing opponents to hit .351 while posting an ERA of 9.00. Freshman Britny Patterson (Corona, CA/Centennial) turned in a good performance to open the season hitting the team’s only home run and driving in a team-high three runners.

OBERLIN opened its season in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 20 and 21 against Greenville and Rhodes. The Yeowomen fell 10-5 to Grenville and dropped three games to Rhodes by the scores of 12-4, 7-6, and 6-2. Sophomore Dana Rae Goldstein (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) hit .583 (7-of-12) on the trip with three RBI and two runs scored. First-year Kat Ladouceur (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Charles P. Allen) drove in a team-best five runs and hit a home run versus Greenville.

OHIO WESLEYAN will open the 2016 season on Monday, March 7th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against St. Mary’s at 5:00 p.m.

WITTENBERG will open the 2016 season on Monday, March 7th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against New England College at 5:00 p.m.

WOOSTER will open the 2016 season on Monday, March 14th, on its spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida against New England College at 3:00 p.m.
