Weather played a factor on what was supposed to be the first weekend of NCAC play. Only six league games were contested all weekend as DePauw (2-0, 8-11) and Kenyon (2-0, 13-8-1) swept Hiram (0-2, 5-17) and Oberlin (0-2, 1-21), respectively, while Wittenberg (1-1, 17-4-1) and Ohio Wesleyan (1-1, 6-12) split a doubleheader. There are seven NCAC doubleheaders scheduled this week with one on Tuesday and three each on Wednesday and Saturday.
ALLEGHENY dropped three straight doubleheaders to Mother Nature last week, as rain postponed doubleheaders versus Geneva (Wed) and Denison (Sat), before a spring snowstorm cost the Gators their Sunday non-conference twinbill with Thiel.
DENISON went 4-2 last week which included a win over 17th-ranked Heidelberg, 7-6, and a pair of thrilling come-from-behind victories over Mount St. Joseph, 13-9 and 11-10. Sophomore Lauren Secaras (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) hit .636 (14-for-22) on the week with two extra-base hits, six runs and six RBI. Fellow sophomore Sarah Herold (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) and freshman Amanda Howell (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) also hit .583 (14-for-24) and .500 (9-for-18), respectively. Inside the circle, Herold went 3-0 in three starts with 12 strikeouts.
DEPAUW opened NCAC play with a sweep of Hiram. The Tigers allowed just one unearned run and three hits in 12 innings, while holding the Terriers to just .079 batting. DePauw hit .468 in the doubleheader with Gabby Smart (Chicago, IL/Trinity) leading the way with .571 batting.
HIRAM dropped all six games last week. Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, OH/Mineral Ridge) blasted her first career home run against Baldwin Wallace and junior Brittany Zajac (Corry, PA/Corry) collected hits in four of six games during the week.
KENYON played four games last week and came away with a 3-0-1 record. The Ladies defeated Otterbein, 12-11, and then tied the Cardinals, 6-6, in the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader that was called due to darkness. Saturday the Ladies opened NCAC play with a two-game sweep of Oberlin. The Ladies took those games by scores of 13-5 and 18-15. During that four-game set, freshman Amanda Ogata (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) was 11-for-17 (.647) at the plate. She had 12 RBI and five runs scored. She hit two doubles, two triples and a home run for a 1.176 slugging percentage.
OBERLIN dropped a mid-week non-conference doubleheader to Ohio Christian 11-9 and 4-3 and then fell in its NCAC opener to Kenyon, 13-5, and, 18-15, in a game that was called after five due to weather. The Yeowomen also had their scheduled home opener versus Defiance washed out on Sunday. Izzy Gonzalez-Velarde (Livermore, CA/Granada) went 6-for-16 over the four games, which included three home runs and six RBI.
OHIO WESLEYAN spilt a doubleheader with Wittenberg last Sunday to open up conference play and now hold a 6-12 record on the year. Senior lefthander Sarah Flint (Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) was the winning pitcher for the Bishops, going all seven innings and only giving up one run on seven hits.
WITTENBERG opened up NCAC play last week, splitting a doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday. Senior Loren Combs (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead the Tigers on the week.
WOOSTER freshman Bridget Serrurier (Morton, IL/Morton) clubbed her team-leading fourth homer of the year to highlight last week. Her two-run shot staked Wooster to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against CWRU. She went on to add a third RBI for the day in the second game with a two-out single in the third inning. Wooster opens NCAC play this week with doubleheaders at Allegheny and Hiram.
