North Coast softball squads continued spring break trips last week, highlighted by Wittenberg getting off to an 8-2 start and Kenyon setting a record for hits in a game with 21 during a 17-10 victory against Alverno. Non-conference action continues this week with all nine teams taking to the diamond.  

ALLEGHENY saw its opening series with Washington & Jefferson cancelled over the weekend due to weather. The Gators will open their season Saturday, March 18th against Carthage in Florida.

DENISON began its 2017 season with a doubleheader split against Chapman. Denison took the opener, 5-3, after the Big Red exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. Sarah Herold (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) picked up the complete-game victory in the circle as she allowed only two runs on six hits. She also had two hits and drove in a run. In the nightcap, Denison fell to the panthers, 7-1. Lauren Secaras (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) led all Big Red offensive players with three hits and hit .500 over the two game span

DEPAUW moved to 1-7 on the season after dropping four games in Texas to two teams ranked in the top-3 in Division III. In the first eight games, five of DePauw’s seven losses have come against ranked opponents.

HIRAM went 3-5 last week in their first week of play at the Tucson Invitational. Hiram defeated Newbury College twice, in addition to topping Bethany Lutheran. Sophomore Kourtney Holcomb (Garrettsville, OH/James A. Garfield) led the Terriers at the plate, hitting .360 (9-for-25) with three RBI, six runs scored, three walks and one stolen base.

KENYON finished off its final nine games in Florida with a 6-3 record. Highlights of the week included a Kenyon record 21 hits in a 17-10 victory over Alverno, as well as another record performance from pitcher Austin Whibley (Silver Spring, MD/Albert Einstein), who struck out 15 batters in a 5-0 victory over Mount Mary. Kenyon’s other wins came against Pitt-Bradford, Bridgewater State, Rockford and Edgewood. Over the course of those nine games, Amanda Ogata (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) hit .486 (18-of-37) with four doubles and a home run. She scored 14 runs, had five RBI and swiped three bases.

OBERLIN was idle last week.

OHIO WESLEYAN will open the 2017 season on Monday, March 13th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against St. Mary’s at 8:00 a.m.

WITTENBERG opened its 2017 season with an 8-2 record in Florida over spring break. The Tigers were led by freshman Olivia Hopkins (Mason, OH/Mason) with 11 hits, four RBI and six stolen bases. Junior Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) posted a 5-1 record in the circle with 33 total strikeouts.

WOOSTER will open the 2017 season on Monday, March 13th, on its spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida against St. Scholastica at 9:00 a.m.
