The North Coast softball season is officially underway as four of the league’s nine teams have opened play and three more will open the year this week. Spring break trips continue this week as Kenyon (2-4), and Wittenberg (0-0) travel to Florida, Hiram (0-2) plays in Arizona, Denison (0-0) heads to California and DePauw (1-3) travels to Texas.  

ALLEGHENY will open the 2017 season on Saturday, March 11th at Washington & Jefferson.

DENISON will open the 2017 season on Sunday, March 12th at Chapman. 

DEPAUW opened the season at the Transylvania Tournament at University of Kentucky. The Tigers placed fourth at the tournament after posting a 1-3 record. Sidney Holler (Overland Park, KS/Shawnee Mission South) went 6-9 (.667) for the weekend with one homer and 4 RBI. Alyssa Nowak (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) was 5-9 (.556).

HIRAM opened its season with a pair of losses at the start of the Terriers’ spring break trip in Arizona. The Terriers are scheduled for eight contests this week on their spring break west coast swing in Arizona.

KENYON split its only two games last week against Rivier and Elms. The Ladies are 2-4 on the season but have shown solid signs on the offensive end as they are batting .400 as a team so far.

OBERLIN had a rough opening weekend as they dropped all four matchups in Emory, Virginia. The Yeowomen battled the Emory & Henry Wasps and Marietta College Pioneers on Saturday and Sunday. In the season opener, the Crimson and Gold dropped a five-inning bout, 15-2 to Marietta before being outlasted by the hosts, 4-3. On Sunday, the Yeowomen closed the southern swing with a pair of losses. Against the Pioneers, the Yeowomen gained a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, but couldn’t hold on, losing 8-5. The Wasps topped the Oberlin women, 10-1, in six innings in the final game of the weekend. Offensively, sophomore Emma Downing (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) led the Yeowomen in Virginia posting five hits in 10 plate appearances. She finished with three runs, two RBI and two walks.

OHIO WESLEYAN will open the 2017 season on Monday, March 13th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against St. Mary’s at 8:00 a.m.

WITTENBERG will open the 2017 season on Monday, March 6th, on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against John Carroll at 1:00 p.m.

WOOSTER will open the 2017 season on Monday, March 13th, on its spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida against St. Scholastica at 9:00 a.m.
