Spring Break trips for North Coast teams wrap up this week with the first weekend of conference play scheduled to open up Saturday March 31st.
ALLEGHENY opened The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida with a pair of wins Sunday to improve to 5-1 on the season. Down 3-1 versus W&J in the seventh, the Gators plated six runs to pick up the 7-3 win. Samantha Valera (Chicago, IL/Lane Technical) and Jessica Gordon (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) had two RBI apiece in the game. In extra innings, Jessica Valerino (Liverpool, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit the game winning RBI which scored Sarah Rogan (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon). Jessica Zavolta (Level Green, PA/Penn-Trafford) hit a two-run homerun in the game.
DENISON'S season got underway on Sunday with a split doubleheader against Centre and Hanover. The Big Red fell to Centre, 8-2, but rallied for a 1-0 win over Hanover. In the win, Sarah Herold (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandberg) fired a complete game, one-hit shutout in the circle for the Big Red.
DEPAUW dropped to 4-8 with four losses at the DePauw Invitational, including two to top-16 teams in Division III. Becca St. Germain (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield South) led the Tigers with a .444 average (4-9) for the week, while Megan Montgomery (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) followed at .375 with a .750 slugging percentage.
HIRAM dropped a pair of tightly contested games to Westminster last week. In game one, the Terriers got on the board early thanks to a pair of first-inning home runs from KT Hager (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate High School) and Shay Call (Caledonia, OH/River Valley). The homers gave Hiram eight already for the season, surpassing last years’ total in just 12 games. In game two, junior Makenzie Dombrowski (Streetsboro, OH/Streetsboro) went the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Hager increased her hit-streak to 12 games with a single in the sixth inning.
KENYON closed its spring break trip last week with wins against Swarthmore and the College of Brockport. Then on Sunday, the Ladies were swept by Otterbein as they fell to 12-6 on the year. Madi Maldonado (Chicago, IL/Lane Technical) led the Ladies in batting last week while also driving in a team-high five runs. Her best performance came verses Swarthmore where she collected three hits, two of which were doubles, scored two runs and drove in four.
OBERLIN dropped its first four games of its spring trip in Florida. Highlighting the action thus far is sophomore centerfielder Emma Downing (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and first-year pitcher Emily Tucci (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park). Downing is batting .462 and Tucci has a 2.65 earned run average in 17 innings pitched. The Yeowomen continue their spring trip with eight more games on the schedule this week.
OHIO WESLEYAN went 7-3 during its spring-break trip to Clermont, Florida. The Bishops closed out the trip with five-straight wins. OWU was led by freshman Madi Drabick (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon) with 18 hits on the week, 14 runs scored and 18 RBI. Drabick was great in the circle as well for the Bishops, posting a 3-0 record with a 3.54 ERA and 14 total strikeouts.
WITTENBERG split with Alma last week, picking up a 12-8 victory in game one before falling in nine innings in game two. Abby Curnutte (Urbana, OH/Urbana) led the Tigers at the plate with four hits in two games, including two home runs and four RBI.
WOOSTER posted a 4-6 record during its first week of spring break action to open the 2018 season. The Fighting Scots were led by sophomore Marina Roski (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch) at the plate, hitting .441 with 15 hits, scoring seven runs and driving in 12 to go along with four home runs.
