North Coast softball squads wrapped up spring break trips last week, as eight teams open up the conference portion of their schedules this Saturday. Highlights include Allegheny (6-7) traveling to Wittenberg (7-11) and Wooster (7-9) hosting DePauw (4-10). Additionally, Denison (3-1) and Oberlin (4-10) will hit the road to square off against Ohio Wesleyan (7-5) and Kenyon (14-8), respectively.
ALLEGHENY wrapped up its week at The Spring Games in Florida by going 1-6. The Gators finished the event with a 3-6 mark. Their win came against Elmhurst, 6-4. In the final seven games, Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond River) hit .619 with 13 hits, three doubles, a homerun, six runs scored and three RBI.
DENISON went 2-0 last week, winning a home-opening doubleheader with Rochester College, 9-1 and 6-5, on Friday afternoon. After senior pitcher Sarah Herold (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandberg) totaled a three-hitter in game one, the Big Red came back to win game two in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Emilie Fisher (Oregonia, OH/Clinton-Massie) hit a walk-off RBI double to win the game and move Denison to 3-1.
DEPAUW is 4-10 on the season with six of the losses coming by one run, including each of the last four.
HIRAM picked up a victory in a doubleheader split with Mount Union last week. In the 4-3 win, freshman Isabel Miranda (Chehalis, WA/W.F. West High School) led the Terriers to the victory with a RBI single in the top of the eighth inning. Junior Makenzie Dombrowski (Streetsboro, OH/Streetsboro) earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two. Freshman KT Hager (Rohnert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate High School) ran her hitting streak to 14-straight games to open the season, posting a trio of hits during the doubleheader.
KENYON split a pair of non-conference doubleheaders over the weekend against Case and Marietta. By picking up a pair of wins, the Ladies, now 14-8 this season, surpassed their win total from a season ago.
OBERLIN finished the week 2-6, as they closed out its spring trip down in Florida. The Yeowomen defeated Sewanee, 1-0, on Wednesday and topped Lawrence by a score of 11-6 on Friday. First-year Emily Tucci (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) and Hannah Rasmussen (Oberlin, OH/Oberlin) picked up the two wins for the Yeowomen. Tucci pitched 29.2 innings and finished the week with an earned runs average of 3.03. At the plate, Oberlin was led by first-years Dani Pechthalt (Los Angeles, CA/Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies) who batted a team-best .450 on the week.
OHIO WESLEYAN dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Alma last week in the Bishops lone action. Freshman Madi Drabick (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon) led OWU on the week with four hits and three runs scored in the two losses.
WITTENBERG posted a 1-3 record last week, dropping both contests in a doubleheader against Otterbein and splitting with Thomas More on Friday. Junior Missy Lee (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) led the Tigers with three RBI in Wittenberg’s lone victory last week.
WOOSTER wrapped up its spring break schedule, which featured two games against nationally-ranked competition, with a 7-9 record after winning three of its last five games in Clermont, Florida. Marina Roski (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch) continued her hot start at the plate, hitting .444 with eight hits, scoring three runs and driving in four, including all three in the 3-1 victory against Farmingdale.
