The North Coast Athletic Conference had four teams compete in the NCAA Division III Basketball Tournament for the second time in the last three years over the weekend, led by the DePauw women advancing to the round of 16 for the eighth time since 1998.
DePauw (29-1), which will host a sectional round pod for the second year in a row, paved its way to the round of 16 with a 79-68 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first round and a 76-68 triumph over Transylvania in the second round last weekend at Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle. Senior Alex Gasaway (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) led the Tigers with 20 points and eight rebounds against CMS, while the senior duo of Ali Ross (Lexington, KY/Lafayette) and Alison Stephens (Praire Village, KS/Shawnee Mission East) led DPU in the win over Transylvania. Ross led all scorers in the game with 17, while Stephens dominated on the glass in the win with 16 rebounds to go along with eight points.
In Friday's sectional semifinal round, DePauw will host Carthage (26-3) and Wisc.-Oshkosh (26-3) will take on Wisc.-Whitewater (24-4). The winners of Friday night's contest will advance to Saturday's sectional final with a berth to the national semifinals on the line. Ticket information and games times will be announced later.
DePauw and Carthage have met twice in their combined history, with each team winning once. The Tigers took an 81-78 win during the 1993-94 season, but the Lady Reds topped the Tigers, 53-48, in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Neal Fieldhouse. The Tigers are 0-1 all-time against Wisc.-Oshkosh and 1-1 against Wisc.-Whitewater after topping the Warhawks, 69-51, in last year's national championship game.
