Wittenberg (4-0, 0-0) is off to its best start since the 1993-94 season when the Tigers opened up the year, 7-0, and have joined DePauw (2-0, 0-0) as the only teams still undefeated on the year. Eight of the nine North Coast squads will be in action this week as non-conference play continues over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
ALLEGHENY finished the week with a 1-2 record, dropping games to Carnegie Mellon and Calvin, before picking up a 66-55 win over Albion on Saturday. Junior Emma Pellicano (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) scored a team-high 20 points for the Gators against the Britons, while freshman Harper Zimmer (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) tallied a season-high 12 points to help the Gators pick up the win on Saturday.
DENISON suffered a pair of losses at Washington University’s McWilliams Classic. Sophomore center Jordan Holmes (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) was named to the All-Tournament team after breaking the McWilliams Classic record for blocked shots in the tournament with 15.
DEPAUW, ranked 7th in coaches’ poll and 9th by D3hoops.com opened the season with a pair of wins at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic, including a win over the host Wisconsin Lutheran and a victory over No. 11/14 Wisconsin-Whitewater. Savannah Trees (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) hit two free throws with 4.5 seconds left to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran.
HIRAM dropped a pair on contests at its own Terrier Tip-Off Classic. On Friday, sophomore Kayla Yost (Norwalk, OH/Perkins) scored 20 points and had a career-high five assists in the Terriers 74-60 loss to Albion. In Saturday’s loss against Calvin, senior Kelsey Koskinen (Madison, OH/Madison) led the Terriers with a game-high 20 points.
KENYON is on a three-game losing streak after this past week’s games. The Ladies had leads in the second halves of their matchups with Earlham and Muskingum but could not prevail. Sophomore guard Sidney Cera (Brookville, OH/Brookville HS) averaged 11.7 points, five assists and 3.3 rebounds per game on the week to lead the Ladies.
OBERLIN turned in a 1-1 week, outlasting Adrian 68-59 in its home opener, but then fell to the visiting Thunder of Trine, 63-43, on Saturday. In the win over the Bulldogs, senior Christina Marquette (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) netted her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
OHIO WESLEYAN split a pair of non-conference contests last weekend, defeating Alma, 63-47, before falling to Wilmington, 73-61, in the championship of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament. Senior guards Kristin Henning (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) and Sarah McQuade (Dublin, OH/Coffman) represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
WITTENBERG defeated Marietta, 79-63, and then powered through the Beth Baker Classic at Wheaton (IL) with wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Aurora to leap to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2008-09. Leading the way was senior wing Darbie Zirkle (St. Paris, OH/Graham), averaging 18 points per game by hitting 26 of her 29 free throw attempts (.897) for a team-best 54 points and an eye-popping 19 steals, topping it off with 18 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks. She went 11-of-13 at the free throw line to key the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps victory with 18 points.
WOOSTER picked up its first win of the season, taking down Geneva 79-63 on the road Wednesday night, then suffered an 81-64 setback at Bluffton on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Lauren Hancher (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 steals on the week for the Scots.
