DePauw (5-1, 1-0), Allegheny (7-2, 1-0), Ohio Wesleyan (3-3, 1-0), Kenyon (3-4, 1-0) and Denison (3-5, 1-0) all jumped out to perfect starts in conference play and sit atop the NCAC standings with a light league schedule coming up this week. 

ALLEGHENY increased its season-high winning streak to five games with three road wins, including the squad’s first NCAC win of the season. Against Waynesburg, junior Jessica Mrdjenovich (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) netted a career-high 28 points in a 92-70 triumph over the Yellow Jackets. Junior Kaitlyn Fromknecht (Erie, PA/McDowell) racked up 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to send the Gators past Hiram, 74-45, before Mrdjenovich added 23 points in Allegheny’s 74-39 win over Houghton on Saturday.

DENISON opened NCAC play with a 24-point victory over Oberlin last week. Jordan Holmes (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) scored 18 points and added 18 rebounds, four steals, five blocks and three assists. Denison is 3-5 entering its pair of conference games this week.

DEPAUW extended its home conference win streak to 88 games after picking up a 92-69 victory over Wooster last week. The last time the Tigers lost a home conference contest was on January 17, 2003 against Trinity while in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. DePauw shot 50 percent from the field in the Wooster win.

HIRAM fell in its first two NCAC contests of the season. On Wednesday, the Terriers fell to Allegheny, 74-45. Freshman Mercedes Jones (Dayton, OH/Ponitz Technology Career Center) led Hiram with 11 points off the bench. On Saturday, sophomore Kayla Yost (Norwalk, OH/Perkins) recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds, in Hiram’s 62-49 loss to Kenyon.

KENYON has won two in a row after a 62-49 road win against Hiram last week. In their last two contests, the Ladies have held their opponents to under 50 total points.

OBERLIN dropped its NCAC-opener to Denison, 72-48, before heading out to Division I Youngstown State where they fell, 92-43. Senior Christina Marquette (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) ripped down a season-high 12 rebounds versus YSU to become Oberlin’s all-time leader with 751 career boards.

OHIO WESLEYAN opened up the NCAC portion of its schedule last week, picking up a 61-56 victory over Wittenberg. Taylor Dickson (Baltimore, OH/Liberty Union) led the Bishops with 17 points as OWU won its NCAC opener for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Emily Julius (Avon, OH/Avon) finished with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while senior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin, OH/Coffman) had 10 points and led the Bishops with five assists.

WITTENBERG fell to Ohio Wesleyan 61-56 in the Tigers’ only action last week despite a 17-point performance from senior Darbie Zirkle (St. Paris, OH/Graham) and 10 rebounds from junior Ali Miller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas).

WOOSTER dropped a challenging non-league tilt, 77-65, to Case, then lost its conference opener at No. 15 DePauw, 92-69. Lauren Hancher (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) continued her high-scoring season with 21 points against Case and 15 at DePauw, as the junior standout is now averaging 19.2 a game.
