The NCAC posted a combined record of 6-1 on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 women’s basketball season. This coming week features a full slate of non-conference games with the first conference games scheduled for December 3rd as Hiram travels to Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan visits Wittenberg and Denison hosts Oberlin.
ALLEGHENY stumbled in its season opener this past Friday as it fell to Saint Vincent, 82-64. The Gators and Bearcats were pretty even through three quarters, but the hosts used a 33-14 fourth quarter to seal the victory. Senior forward Emma Pellicano (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) registered the 15th double-double of her career against Saint Vincent with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Gators were excellent at the charity stripe against the Bearcats, hitting 15-of-17 attempts (88.2%).
DENISON opened the season with a pair of wins over Case, 63-57, and Wilmington, 64-49. Jordan Holmes (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) averaged 17.0 ppg, 21.0 rpg and six bpg in the wins. She shot .778 from the floor and also added four steals while playing all 40 minutes in each contest. Holmes’ 30-point effort against Case was one point shy of her career high.
DEPAUW opened the season with a win at Adrian. Emily Budde (Cincinnati, OH/Mother of Mercy) led the Tigers with 13 points, while Abby Keller (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
HIRAM opened its season with a 70-63 win over Mt. St. Joseph at the Lauren Hill Tipoff Classic at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier. Sophomore Mercedes Jones (Dayton, OH/Ponitz Career Technology Center) led the Terriers by posting career-highs in points (27) and rebounds (14). Junior Kayla Yost (Norwalk, OH/Perkins) added 10 points and sophomore Kaylee Shockley (Uniontown, OH/Lake) scored nine points and pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds.
KENYON was idle last week and will open up its 2015-16 season Friday against Olivet at Earlham.
OBERLIN opened the season with a convincing 75-44 win over Olivet. Senior Caroline Hamilton (North Yarmouth, ME/Greely) scored 19 points off the bench, while classmate Lindsey Bernhardt (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades School) added 14 points in the win.
OHIO WESLEYAN was idle last week and will open up its 2015-16 season Monday at Otterbein.
WITTENBERG was idle last week and will open up its 2015-16 season Monday as the Tigers host Marietta.
WOOSTER won its season lid-lifter for the third time in the last four years with a 79-61 defeat of Franciscan. Junior guards Rachel Collins (Westlake, OH/Westlake) and Danielle Besancon (Wooster, OH/Smithville) scored career-highs with 20 and 12 points, respectively. Lisa Panepento became the first coach in program history to win her debut. Wooster hosts its annual Nan Nichols Classic this weekend with Adrian, Alma and Hanover rounding out the field.
