After starting the season 2-3, Allegheny (6-3, 2-0) has won four-straight and is tied atop the league standings with a perfect conference record after defeating Kenyon, 57-53, last week. DePauw (7-2, 2-0) and Wittenberg (3-4, 2-0) are also unbeaten in league play and tied with the Gators going into the Holiday Break. This week features a light schedule of non-conference contests with Hiram, Kenyon and Wooster in action.
ALLEGHENY enters a three-week break unbeaten in NCAC play, thanks to a 57-53 victory at Kenyon this past Wednesday. Ifeyinwa Uwazie (Monroeville, PA/Oakland Catholic) and Delaney Arbore (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) led the Gators with 13 points, while Emma Pellicano (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Kaitlyn Fromknecht (Erie, PA/McDowell) tallied three blocks in the Gators’ win over the Ladies and now has 43 for the season. That mark is three shy of tying fourth place in the program single-season record book.
DENISON split a pair of NCAC games last week, picking up a home victory over Ohio Wesleyan, 48-32, before suffering a 50-40 setback at Wittenberg. Junior Emily Krumpe (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) had a team-high 12 points per game, highlighted by a season-high tying 14 points against OWU. Junior Jordan Holmes (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) averaged a double-double, with 11 points and 16.5 rebound per contest to go along with seven total blocks.
With its victory over Oberlin, DEPAUW extended its win streak in regular season home conference games to 96 with the last defeat coming in January 2003. Sophomore Melinda Franke (Warrensville, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) established a career rebounding high with 10 against Anderson and then topped it with 11 in the win over Oberlin.
HIRAM was idle last week. The Terriers will return to action on Monday against Franciscan before the Holiday Break.
Trailing by double digits early in the game, KENYON rallied and took its first lead against Allegheny mid-way through the fourth quarter. The visiting Gators, however, closed out the contest on a 10-2 run and escaped with a 57-53 win. Freshman Lane Davis (Darien, CT/St. George’s) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the Ladies.
OBERLIN suffered from a cold shooting night, hitting just 25-percent (19-of-76) of its shots in a tight 52-50 home loss to Wooster last Wednesday. Sophomore guard Tyler Parlor (Detroit, MI/Mercy) was the lone bright spot, notching her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Yeowomen, who have now lost four in a row, also fell 63-45 at DePauw last week where Parlor led the team with 12 points.
OHIO WESLEYAN dropped to 0-2 in league play after a 48-32 decision versus Denison last Tuesday. The Bishops then fell to Ohio Christian on Saturday, 76-65. Junior post Taylor Dickson (Baltimore, OH/Liberty Union) led OWU on the week averaging 19 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
WITTENBERG improved to a perfect 2-0 in conference play after an impressive defensive performance against Denison, winning, 50-40, last Saturday. Sophomore Becca Ziska (Brook Park, OH/Berea-Midpark) led the way with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist. The Tigers have now won two of it last three games.
WOOSTER won its third game by two points or fewer this year with its 52-50 triumph over Oberlin last week. Senior Lauren Hancher (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) scored 10-straight points for Wooster as part of a 12-0 first period run. Hancher has now scored at least eight points in the first period in three straight games. The senior later moved into fifth on the program’s all-time scoring list, surpassing LaSonya Crawl (1989-93) with a fourth period layup.
