North Coast women’s lacrosse squads posted an 8-6 record last week against non-conference opponents with Oberlin (3-0), Ohio Wesleyan (3-0), Wooster (2-0), Wittenberg (1-0) and Kenyon (0-0) all still undefeated. Non-conference action continues this week with a number of teams on spring break trips.
ALLEGHENY split a pair of games last week to open up its 2016 campaign. The Gators fell by one to an Augustana team that went 19-2 in 2015, but rebounded to defeat Frostburg State, 10-9, thanks to a seven-goal second half. Jackie Morrow (Ann Arbor, MI/Skyline) and Shelby Piper (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) each tallied hat tricks in the victory against the Bobcats, with the latter scoring the game-winning goal.
DENISON made a trip to Western New York and suffered a pair of losses to Brockport St., 14-6, and Fredonia St., 10-7. over the weekend. The Big Red will return to action next week when they play three games in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
DEPAUW dropped to 1-2 with an 8-7 loss to Illinois Wesleyan and a 14-10 defeat against North Central. For the week, Emma Flynn (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) scored five goals, including four against Illinois Wesleyan. Nicole Gibson (Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill) totaled a team-high four assists and added two goals to lead the squad with six points.
HIRAM dropped its home and season-opener to Muskingum by a 16-10 score on Wednesday. Junior Autumn Osgood (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union) paced Hiram with three goals and an assist. Sophomores Alyse Gillentine (Hartville, OH/Lake), Sierah Ray (Tallmadge, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Katelyn Slomovitz (Kent, OH/Roosevelt) each tallied two goals for the Terriers.
KENYON will open the 2016 season on Tuesday, March 8th on its spring break trip in Florida versus Alfred.
OBERLIN remained unbeaten as the Yeowomem took down Baldwin Wallace and Sewanee on Wednesday and Saturday. The Yeowomen combined for 30 goals in the two victories, with six different players netting goals in the wins. Natalie Rauchle (Edina, MN/Edina) continued her stellar start to the season with six goals against the Jackets and another three on Saturday. Maggie Mullard (Boxford, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) also had a standout performance as combined for 8 goals one the week.
OHIO WESLEYAN is off to a 3-0 start to a season for the first time since 2007 after defeating Mount St. Joseph, 10-3, and Keuka, 20-8, last week. Senior midfielder Taylor Weis (Sylvania, OH/Northview) led the Bishops on the week with six goals and one assist for seven total points.
WITTENBERG opened its 2016 season last week with an impressive 17-10 home victory against John Carroll. Junior attacker Becca Joseph (Toledo, OH/St. Ursula) led the Tigers in the win by pouring in six goals and adding two assists for eight total points.
WOOSTER opened the year 2-0 with a 17-11 victory over NCAA Div. II Walsh and a 12-11 win against Sewanee when Helena Enders (Lake Oswego, OR/St. Mary’s Academy)scored 1:23 into Sunday’s second overtime. Senior Ellie Hudson-Heck (Medina, OH/Medina) totaled seven points (5 goals, 2 assists), six caused turnovers, six groundballs and five draw controls to lead Wooster on the week. After producing a game-high four caused turnovers in Thursday’s win over Walsh, the midfielder showcased her offensive skill set with a team-high four goals plus an assist during the thrilling victory against Sewanee.
