Denison saw it successful season come to a close in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament as the Big Red fell to No. 19 Brockport, 17-7, on Sunday afternoon at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 27 seconds in to the game as Maddy Heher (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) connected with Claudia Rafi (Mason, OH/Ursuline Academy) on her 38th goal of the season. Brockport responded by scoring six-straight goals over a 16-minute span with Kelly Wall registering four and Heather Conklin tallying the other two. Wall and Conklin combined for 11 of the Golden Eagles’ 17 goals on the day.
Denison cut the lead to three after Heher scored with 8:16 left in the first and Leah Israel (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood) followed with her 31st goal of the season via Heher’s second assist of the game. Brockport again responded to the Big Red push, scoring just 13 seconds after the Israel goal, which sparked a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles to take an 11-3 lead into halftime. Brockport outscored Denison, 6-4, in the second half to secure the win.
Wall scored six goals off of eight shots and Conklin netted five goals via 10 shots. Sara Shaddock posted three saves for Brockport while playing all 60 minutes in goal.
Heher led DU in points with four on two goals and two assists. Denison’s remaining five goals were scored by Claire Ludlow (East Grand Rapids, MI/East), Rafi, Halle Walsh (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), Reid Hirschey (Edina, MN/Edina) and Israel. Ludlow leaves DU with 177 goals and 71 assists for 248 points. She ranks second in Denison history in all three categories.
Brockport improves to 16-2 and advances to the third round where they will face Middlebury.
Denison finished the year with a record of 15-4, including the program’s 11th NCAC Tournament championship and its 19th regular season title after posting a perfect conference record of 8-0.
