2012 NCAC Women's Tennis Players of the Week

April 23rd

Abigail Younger, Kenyon
(Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep)

Kenyon freshman Abigail Younger went 2-0 at No. 6 singles this week. Her 6-3, 6-4 win at Allegheny on Sunday provided the decisive point as the Ladies rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 win. At Wooster, Younger also won at No. 6 singles and paired up with senior Anna Becker (Portland, OR/Sunset) for a No. 2 doubles win.

April 16th

Carolyn Ball, Oberlin
(Milwaukee, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels)

Oberlin senior Carolyn Ball turned in a 5-0 week, going 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 playing No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles. Against Denison, she scored the clinching point as her and Ariel Lewis (Vacaville, CA/Vanden) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles to give Oberlin a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. She then clinched the match, scoring the decisive fifth point by winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at No.6  singles.

April 9th

Alex Marcell, Denison
(Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy)

Denison junior Alex Marcell went a combined 9-0 last week after going 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 5-0 at the first doubles flight with partner Sarah Short (Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel). All four of Marcell’s singles wins came in straight-sets, with her opponent scoring no more than two points per set. 

April 2nd

Sarah Short, Denison
(Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel)

Denison senior Sarah Short went 4-0 on the week after logging a pair of singles and doubles wins. Short posted victories over Wittenberg’s Leah Ann Miller (6-4, 6-1) and Dayton’s Claire McNulty (6-4, 6-3) at first singles. The senior has now won five-straight singles matches and is 6-5 at the first singles flight.

March 26th

Leah Ann Miller, Wittenberg
Springfield, OH/Catholic Central

Wittenberg sophomore Leah Ann Miller did not drop a set in singles action, winning 6-0, 6-0 in both matches at the No. 1 spot. Miller also won in both of  her No. 1 doubles matches as she led  the Tigers to two 9-0 wins over Transylvania and IU-East.

March 19th

Emily Kiourtsis, Ohio Wesleyan
(Pickerington, OH/North)

Senior Emily Kiourtsis (Pickerington, OH/North) was a double winner in all four matches as Ohio Wesleyan swept its competition last week by defeating East Stroudsburg, Millersville, Olivet and Greenville. On the week, Kiourtsis went 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 4-0 at No. 2 doubles. She did not lose a set in singles play during the four matches, and had two shutouts during the week.

March 12th

Alex Cummins, Wittenberg
(New Lebanon, OH/Dixie)

Wittenberg senior Alex Cummins led the Tigers over their spring break trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with a 3-2 record at No. 1 singles and a 3-2 record in doubles action. She helped lead the Tigers to victories over Assumption, 7-2, Regis, 9-0, and Findlay, 5-4.

March 5th

Maggie MacPhail, DePauw
(Indianapolis, IN/Park Tudor)

DePauw freshman Maggie MacPhail helped guide the Tigers to a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Championships after posting a record of 2-1 at No. 2 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. After dropping the first singles set against Carmen VacaGuzman of Chicago by a 6-1 decision, she rallied to win the second set 6-1 and then completed the comeback with a 7-6 (7-5) tie-break victory in the third set.

February 27th

Kelly Gebert, DePauw
(Wichita, KS/Mt. Carmel Catholic)

DePauw senior Kelly Gerbert helped guide the Tigers to three victories on the week over Luther, 9-0, Oberlin, 8-1, and Grand Valley St., 6-3. Gerbert was 5-1 on the week overall with her lone loss coming in the No. 1 singles position against Grand Valley State.

February 19th

Ariel Lewis, Oberlin
(Vacaville, CA/Vacaville)

Oberlin senior Ariel Lewis improved to 3-0 at the No. 1 singles spot this season after earning a 6-1, 6-4 win on Saturday in the Yeowomen’s 8-1 triumph over Otterbein. Lewis, who is ranked 12th in the Central Region, has now earned 76 career singles wins.
